Alex Stewart, also known as "The Destroyer," was a heavyweight boxer who had a professional career that spanned over 12 years, from 1986 to 1999. He was born on June 28, 1964, in London, England, and passed away on November 16, 2016, in Mount Vernon, New York, at the age of 52.
Stewart represented Jamaica at the 1984 Olympics and won a bronze medal in the heavyweight division at the 1983 Pan American Games. During his professional career, he fought against world champions such as Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, George Foreman, Oleg Maskaev, and Michael Moorer. Stewart is well known for his ability to finish strong, as 40 of his 43 career wins came inside the distance.
Stewart's career statistics are impressive. In a total of 53 fights, he won 43, with 40 of those wins coming by knockout. He suffered 10 losses, with seven of those losses coming via knockout. He had no draws or no-contests.
Stewart made his professional boxing debut against James Walker on September 6, 1986, at the age of 22, defeating Walker via third-round TKO. He went on to win 23 more consecutive fights after his debut, which included 23 wins via stoppage.
Some of Stewart's notable victories include wins over Ezra Sellers, Jesse Ferguson, David Jaco, James Warring, and Darren Hayden.
However, Stewart's most notable fight was his December 8, 1990, matchup against Mike Tyson. Although The Destroyer had a total of 53 fights, this fight against Mike Tyson is the sole highlight of his career. Unfortunately, Stewart lost the fight against Tyson via 1st round TKO.
Even though Stewart fought against some of the biggest names in boxing, including Holyfield, Foreman, and Tyson, he never won a title or defended one. He did not have any title-fight KO wins either. His total title wins and defense remain zero.
Stewart had a total of 10 losses in his professional boxing career, all of which occurred in non-title bouts. His first loss was against Evander Holyfield via 8th round TKO on November 4, 1989, which ended his 24-fight win streak. For more details regarding all of Stewart's losses, refer to "All of Alex Stewart's losses."
Stewart's last professional fight was a non-title bout against Cuban boxer Jorge Luis González on June 6, 1999, at the age of 34. Unfortunately, Stewart lost the fight via 2nd round TKO.
After suffering two consecutive knockout losses, Stewart retired from boxing in 1999. He worked in the New York area for a liquor distributor after his retirement. In November 2016, Stewart passed away due to a blood clot in his lung.
Alex Stewart was an exceptional boxer who fought against some of the greatest names in the sport. Though he did not win any titles, his career statistics and significant victories remain noteworthy. Fans and boxing enthusiasts remember him as a strong finisher, and his remarkable career serves as an inspiration for the younger generation of boxers.
