He debuted in professional boxing on December 4, 2004, against Michael Robinson at the age of 21 and won the fight via 3rd round TKO. Berto maintained an unbeaten streak for his first 27 fights before suffering his first loss to Victor Ortiz via 12 round unanimous decision on April 16, 2011.
Berto won a total of 32 fights out of 37 matches, with 24 of his wins coming via KO. He also won two world titles in the welterweight division during his career.
One of the highlights of Berto's career was his first world title win against Miguel Ángel Rodríguez via 7th round TKO on June 21, 2008. He successfully defended the WBC welterweight title five times against Steve Forbes, Juan Urango, Carlos Quintana, Freddy Hernández, and Jan Zaveck. Berto won the IBF welterweight title by beating Jan Zaveck via 5th round RTD on September 3, 2011. On September 12, 2015, he fought against Floyd Mayweather Jr. for the WBA (Super), WBC, and The Ring welterweight titles but lost via 12 round unanimous decision.
Berto retired from professional boxing with a record of 32-5, including two losses via KO.
Throughout his career, Berto faced some of the most prominent boxers of his time, including Victor Ortiz, Jan Zaveck, and Floyd Mayweather Jr. However, some of his most notable victories include wins over Jan Zaveck, Freddy Hernández, Victor Ortiz, Juan Urango, Carlos Quintana, Steve Forbes, and Josesito López.
Berto's journey in professional boxing began on a high note as he won his first 27 fights, including his first world title win against Rodriguez in 2008. His unbeaten streak ended in 2011 when he lost to Victor Ortiz, putting a halt to his progress in the welterweight division.
Despite the setback, Berto managed to bounce back and won the IBF welterweight title after defeating Jan Zaveck in 2011. He continued competing until his last fight on August 4, 2018, when he fought against Devon Alexander and won via 12 round split-decision.
Berto's agile movements, quick footwork, and powerful punches made him a formidable opponent in the ring. Throughout his career, he won a total of 24 fights via KO, showing his prowess as a knockout artist.
Berto's two losses via KO came against Jesus Soto Karass and Shawn Porter. Nevertheless, he remained a tough opponent to beat, with his constant pressure and aggressive approach inside the ring.
Berto's remarkable career and achievements in the ring will forever be etched in the history of boxing. He may have retired, but his legacy as a boxer will live on, as one of the most worthy opponents in the welterweight division.
