Buster Douglas, a former professional boxer, had a remarkable career that spanned over 17 years from 1981 to 1999. Throughout his career, he participated in a total of 46 fights, winning 38, losing 6, drawing one, with one no-contest. Douglas knocked out 25 of his opponents and won three heavyweight world titles.
His professional boxing debut was against Dan O’Malley in May 1981 at the age of 21. He won the fight by TKO in the third round. After his debut victory, he won four consecutive fights, with 3 of them ending in stoppages.
In May 1987, after 28 professional fights, Douglas had his first world-title fight against Tony Tucker for the IBF heavyweight title. Unfortunately, he lost to Tucker by TKO in the 10th round.
Douglas had some major victories in his career, including wins over Oliver McCall, Trevor Berbick, Mike Tyson, Donnie Long, Mike Williams, Jerry Halstead, and Percell Davis.
One of his career highlights was his victory over Berbick in February 1989. Douglas won by unanimous decision after 10 rounds of boxing.
However, his most significant success came in February 1990 when he defeated Mike Tyson by knockout in the 10th round. This win marked a significant turning point in his career, as he became the undisputed heavyweight world champion, holding the WBA, WBC, and IBF heavyweight world-champion belts.
Despite his success, Douglas suffered six losses in his career, of which two were in title bouts and four in non-title bouts. His first loss was against David Bey in November 1981 via TKO in the second round. All his five career losses were via knockout, and he lost one via decision.
Douglas retired from professional boxing with a record of 38-6-1, which included 25 knockout wins and five losses via knockout.
It’s been over 24 years since Douglas’ last fight, a non-title bout against Andre Crowder on February 19, 1999. Douglas won the fight via TKO in the first round.
Buster Douglas’ remarkable performance in his career has made him a legend in boxing history. His success against Mike Tyson, the then-undefeated heavyweight world champion, remains one of the greatest upsets in boxing history. This achievement alone defines his legacy, and he will always be remembered as a legendary boxer.
