Chad Dawson is a retired American professional boxer who competed from 2001 to 2019. Dawson was born on July 13, 1982, in Hartsville, South Carolina, USA. He has held multiple light-heavyweight world championships and was one of the most highly regarded boxers in that division between 2006 and 2013.
Dawson's professional boxing career spanned more than 18 years, from 2001 to 2019. He made his professional debut against Steve Garrett at the age of 19 on August 18, 2001, defeating Garrett via 2nd round TKO. He went on to win 13 more consecutive fights after the debut, which included 9 wins via stoppage.
Dawson started his career as a middleweight, later moving up to super middleweight where he defeated notable opponents such as Ian Gardner and Carl Daniels. His career took a temporary setback when he failed a post-fight drug test in 2004 for marijuana, which resulted in a six-month suspension from boxing. Because of this, Dawson's streak of fourteen consecutive wins came to an end when his win over Aundalen Sloan on March 27, 2004, was changed to a no contest.
Dawson's first world title fight took place at the age of 24 on February 3, 2007, after 23 professional fights, against Tomasz Adamek for the light-heavyweight WBC title. He defeated Adamek via a 12-round unanimous decision to become the WBC light-heavyweight champion of the world. His career highlights include wins over Hall-of-Famer Bernard Hopkins, Antonio Tarver, Tomasz Adamek, Glen Johnson, Carl Daniels, and George Blades.
Dawson is a southpaw and stands at 6 ft 1 in (185 cm) with a reach of 76+1⁄2 in (194 cm). He has fought in various weight classes, including Middleweight, Super middleweight, and Light heavyweight. Dawson has won four world titles at light-heavyweight. He has a total of 43 fights in his career, of which he won 36 fights, lost 5 fights and had no draws. Dawson won 19 of his fights by knockout. He retired with a record of 36-5, which included 19 knockout wins and three losses via knockout, and four title wins.
In 2010, Dawson suffered his first loss against Jean Pascal via an 11th round technical decision. The defeat ended his 29-fight win streak. Dawson retired from professional boxing after his last fight on October 11, 2019, a non-title bout against Denis Grachev. Dawson won the fight via an 8-round unanimous decision. It has been 3 years, 5 months, and 20 days since this fight
Dawson has had a colorful career, including an ill-fated move down to super middleweight in 2012, where he challenged Andre Ward for the unified WBA (Super), WBC, Ring, and lineal titles. In what would prove to be an ill-fated move, Ward handed Dawson his second loss as it became clear that Dawson could no longer compete at a lower weight. He then returned to light heavyweight to defend his titles, where he was knocked out by Adonis Stevenson in one round in 2013.
Dawson's first career setback was a loss to Jean Pascal in 2010. He would rebound by winning the WBC title for a second time and the Ring magazine and lineal titles by defeating Bernard Hopkins in 2012. In the same year, The Ring ranked Dawson as the world's tenth best active boxer, pound for pound.
In his career, Dawson had five losses in his professional boxing career — three of them in title bouts and two in non-title bouts. He suffered his first loss against Jean Pascal via an 11th round technical-decision on August 14, 2010. His other losses include a TKO to Adonis Stevenson in the 1st round, a unanimous decision loss to Andre Ward, a split decision loss to Jean Pascal, and a unanimous decision loss to Adonis Stevenson.
Dawson's career highlights include the following:
February 3, 2007: Dawson won his first world title by defeating Tomasz Adamek via 12-round unanimous decision. He became the WBC light-heavyweight world champion.
