Diego "Chico" Corrales Jr. was a phenomenal boxer who competed professionally from 1996 to 2007. He had an illustrious career, winning five world titles at two different weight classes. Corrales' professional boxing career spanned more than eleven years. He fought in a total of 45 fights, winning 40 fights with 33 of those being knockout wins. Corrales had an impressive career record with no draws or no-contests to his name.
Corrales put on some legendary performances in his career. However, one fight that stood out was his 2005 bout with José Luis Castillo, which was regarded as the best fight of the year by The Ring and the Boxing Writers Association of America. The fight showcased a resilient and iron-willed Corrales who won his fourth world championship belt in two different weight classes.
Diego Corrales made his professional debut at 18 years old against Everett Barry in a third-round TKO. After his debut, he went on to win 32 consecutive fights, with 26 victories coming via stoppage. After 28 professional fights, he had his first world title fight against Robert Garcia for the IBF super-featherweight title at the age of 22. He defeated Robert Garcia via a 7th round TKO to become the super-featherweight champion of the world.
Corrales faced his toughest challenge against the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. on January 20, 2001. Unfortunately, Corrales lost the fight via 10th round TKO. It was his first defeat in his professional career, and he suffered three losses via KO throughout his career. Corrales trained hard to return to the ring after serving 14 months in prison for allegations of domestic abuse against his then-pregnant wife.
One of Corrales' proudest moments came on May 7, 2005, when he became a unified lightweight world champion by beating José Luis Castillo via a 10th round TKO. He held the WBO, WBC, and The Ring lightweight world-champion belts. He also won a total of five world titles across two different weight classes during his career, defending the title successfully four times.
Corrales had to retire from boxing in 2007 after losing his final non-title bout against Ghanaian boxer Joshua Clottey. Corrales lost the fight following a 10 round unanimous decision. Sadly, Diego Corrales passed away on May 7, 2007, in a tragic motorcycle accident near his home in Las Vegas, Nevada. His BAC was 0.25% at the time, which is approximately three times the legal limit for Nevada.
Diego Corrales' greatest asset was his resilience, and his ability to overcome adversity is what made him a fan favorite. His incredible come-from-behind victory against José Luis Castillo is still regarded as one of the greatest moments in boxing history. Corrales was tough, determined, and always put on a show for his fans. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest boxers of all time, leaving a lasting legacy on the sport that he loved so much.
