Emanuel Augustus, also known as the "Drunkard Master," was a professional boxer who had a remarkable career spanning over 16 years. Born under the name Emanuel Burton, he changed his name after converting to Islam in 1996.
Over the course of his career, Augustus competed in 78 fights, finishing with a record of 37 wins, 34 losses, 6 draws, and no-contests. He had a total of 19 knockout wins and suffered 5 losses via knockout. Despite recording a less than impressive record, Augustus was well-respected by both his peers and fans due to the entertainment and excitement he brought to his fights. He was known to be an unpredictable fighter, always keeping his opponents guessing and never backing down from a challenge.
Augustus had his first professional bout at 19 years old, defeating Jamie Cooper via 6 round unanimous decision on July 23, 1994. Four years later, at 23, he had his first world title fight for the super-lightweight IBF title against Jon Thaxton. After 33 professional fights, he defeated Thaxton via 7th round TKO to become the super-lightweight champion of the world.
Throughout his career, Augustus fought several notable opponents, including Sammy Sparkman, Dillon Carew, and Jon Thaxton, whom he defeated to win his world title. Despite only defending his title once, Augustus had a successful boxing career, winning the hearts of many with his heart, determination, and unique boxing style.
Augustus' fighting style was one of the most distinctive and entertaining in the sport. He was known for his unorthodox technique, utilizing a variety of flashy footwork, switching stances, and implementing constant movement to confuse his opponents. His style was a mix of martial arts, street fighting, and traditional boxing, which would make it hard not to be entertained while watching him fight.
As mentioned earlier, Augustus suffered 34 losses in his career, which included one loss in a title bout and 33 losses in non-title bouts. His first loss came against Eldon Sneed via 6 round unanimous decision on October 13, 1994. Augustus was stopped five times and lost 29 times via decision. Despite these losses, Augustus was always willing to fight anyone who wanted to step into the ring with him. He never backed away from a challenge and was always willing to give his all, which endeared him to boxing fans worldwide.
Augustus' final professional fight was a non-title bout against Vernon Paris, which took place on January 29, 2011. The bout ended in an 8 round unanimous decision victory for Paris, which resulted in Augustus retiring from professional boxing with a record of 37-34-6.
While Augustus never achieved the same levels of success as some of his contemporaries, his impact on the sport of boxing is unforgettable. He was a fighter that always put on a show, no matter who he was fighting. Augustus never failed to entertain and bring excitement to the ring, which is why he is still remembered fondly by boxing fans and peers to this day. Despite his record not being the best, Emanuel Augustus will always be a boxing legend remembered for his unique style, determination, and heart.
