Gabriel Campillo was a Spanish former professional boxer who competed from 2002 to 2015. Over the course of his career, he won 25 out of the 34 fights he competed in, with 12 of those being knockout wins. He faced eight losses, with five of those losses coming via knockout, and one draw.
Campillo had his professional boxing debut on October 4, 2002, against Arturas Margis, defeating his opponent with a third-round RTD. From there, he went on to win 11 consecutive fights, four of which were stoppages.
On June 20, 2009, after 19 professional fights, Campillo had his first world title fight against Hugo Hernán Garay for the light-heavyweight WBA title. He defeated Garay via 12-round majority decision, becoming the light-heavyweight champion of the world.
However, he lost his title in a rematch against Beibut Shumenov via a split decision in a result that many observers deemed controversial. Campillo continued to have difficulty with judges' scorecards when he faced IBF light-heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud on February 18, 2012, losing by split decision despite suffering two knockdowns in the first round, which he later got up from to continue the fight.
Despite his setbacks, Campillo went on to win more notable victories, defeating the likes of Mirzet Bajrektarevic, Ionut Trandafir Ilie, Ricky Dennis Pow, and Hugo Hernán Garay. He also won one world title at light-heavyweight and has had one title defense.
Gabriel Campillo was known by his nickname "Chico Guapo," translated as "The Handsome Guy," and was born on December 19, 1978, in Madrid, Spain. He was a southpaw boxer who fought in two weight classes, super-middleweight, and light-heavyweight.
After having 34 fights, Campillo retired from professional boxing with a record of 25-8-1, which included 12 knockout wins and five losses via knockout, and one title win. His last professional boxing match was a non-title bout against American boxer Marcus Browne on September 12, 2015, which he lost via first-round KO.
In his professional career, Campillo encountered some of the most fierce boxers in the industry. He had his ups and downs and faced a lot of setbacks throughout his career, but his resilience and determination propelled him to be a formidable opponent in every fight he participated in.
Thank you, Gabriel Campillo, for your contributions to the sport of boxing, and we wish you all the best in your endeavors beyond the ring.
