Ishe Smith, born on July 22, 1978, is a former American professional boxer who fought in the super welterweight division from 2000 to 2019. He was the first American-born winner of the boxing reality television series "The Contender" and was also a world champion.
Smith's professional boxing career spanned over 18 years, starting in 2000 and ending in 2019. He fought a total of 40 fights, with 29 wins, 11 losses, and zero draws or no-contests. Out of his 29 wins, 12 came by way of knockout.
Smith had his first professional debut against Jose Meraz in July 2000 and won via 3rd round TKO. He won 14 more consecutive fights after the debut, six of which ended via stoppage.
It was not until February 23, 2013, that Smith had his first world title fight at the age of 34 after 29 professional fights. He fought against Cornelius Bundrage for the super-welterweight IBF title and defeated him via 12 round majority decision. This win made Smith the super-welterweight champion of the world. Smith won his one and only world title in the super welterweight division.
Although Smith has only one world title win to his name, his career is highlighted with notable victories, including wins over Cornelius Bundrage and Randall Bailey. Bailey was defeated by Smith via 12th round unanimous decision, which was the first remarkable performance of his career.
However, Smith also suffered 11 losses in his professional boxing career, with two of them in title bouts and nine in non-title bouts. He was stopped once and lost ten times via decision. The first loss Smith suffered was against Sergio Mora via 5 round split-decision in September 2004, ending his 15-fight win streak. Smith's last professional non-title bout was against fellow American boxer Erickson Lubin on February 9, 2019. Smith lost the fight via 3rd round RTD. It has been four years, one month, and 22 days since this fight took place, and Smith retired from professional boxing with a record of 29-11.
Ishe Smith may not have had the most illustrious career in boxing, but his one world title win and notable victories made him a respected fighter in the super welterweight division. Smith's career reminds us that success is not only about the number of titles won, but also about the hard work, dedication, and commitment that boxers put into their craft.
