Jesús Cuellar is a retired Argentine professional boxer who had an illustrious career spanning more than 11 years. Born on September 3, 1986, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Cuellar made his professional boxing debut against Cristian Omar Gimenez on June 12, 2008, at the age of 21.
Cuellar's professional record boasts an impressive 29 wins, 4 losses, and 0 draws, with 22 knockout wins. During his career, he won the featherweight world WBA (Regular) championship and defended the title twice.
He is known for his power and aggressive fighting style, which was evident in his 13 stoppage wins within his first 17 wins. His notable victories include wins over Vic Darchinyan, Juan Manuel López, Carlos Padilla, Jonathan Oquendo, Claudio Marrero, Ruben Tamayo, and Rico Ramos.
After his 17-fight win streak, Cuellar suffered his first loss against Óscar Escandón via 7th round TKO on October 15, 2011, in a fight that ended in a big upset.
Despite the setback, Cuellar rebounded and won his next six fights, including his first world championship victory in 2013, a technical knockout (TKO) win over Claudio Marrero. Cuellar became the featherweight world WBA (Regular) champion after his impressive 27th professional fight.
He successfully defended his title twice against Vic Darchinyan and Ruben Tamayo in 2015, both via knockout wins. His campaign to unify featherweight titles fell short when he lost a unification fight against Abner Mares in 2016 in California, via split decision.
One of Cuellar's most controversial fights was a voluntary non-title defense against Juan Manuel López in 2014. Cuellar won the fight via a unanimous decision, but the win was surrounded by some controversy as the judges' scorecards had discrepancies. Some had the fight much closer, while others had Cuellar winning widely.
In 2019, three years after his unification fight loss, Cuellar faced Dominican boxer Javier Fortuna in a non-title bout but lost via 2nd round knockout. Jesús Cuellar retired from professional boxing with a record of 29-4, including 22 knockout wins and three knockout losses.
Cuellar's aggressive nature in the ring made him a fan favorite, and his talent earned him a place among the best featherweight boxers at the peak of his career. Despite his retirement, his bouts will continue to be talked about for years to come. His title defenses against Vic Darchinyan and Ruben Tamayo are highly regarded, his win over Juan Manuel López had its infamy, and his loss to Abner Mares served to diminish his world-class standing in the ring.
For those who followed his career, Jesús Cuellar is a name synonymous with power and sheer will. His boxing records and achievements speak for themselves and are proof of his tremendous talent and grit. He will forever be remembered as one of Argentina's most accomplished fighters and respected boxing luminaries on a global scale.
