Lionel Rose, one of Australia's greatest boxers, had a career spanning over 12 years. Within that time, he fought 53 times and won 42 of those fights, 12 of them by knockout. His career included three world titles, three title defences, and no draws or no-contests.
At the age of 16, Rose had his first professional boxing match against Mario Magris, which he won by eight-round PTS. After four consecutive victories, two of which were by stoppage, Rose had his first world title fight at the age of 19.
Rose's first world title fight was against Fighting Harada on February 27, 1968, after 29 professional fights. He won the bantamweight WBA, WBC, and The Ring titles after defeating Harada via 15 round unanimous decision, making him the bantamweight champion of the world. This victory became the highlight of his career.
Lionel Rose was a one-time undisputed bantamweight world champion, winning three world titles at bantamweight. Some of his most notable victories include wins over Fighting Harada, José Medel, Takao Sakurai, Giuseppe Agate, Alan Rudkin, Chucho Castillo, and Ernie Cruz.
Throughout his career, Rose lost a total of 11 fights, two of which were title bouts against Chucho Castillo and Rubén Olivares. In non-title bouts, Rose suffered nine defeats. His first loss was a six-round PTS defeat against Singtong Por Tor on July 23, 1965.
Rose had a total of four losses via knockout out of 11 losses in his professional boxing career, including his last professional bout against Maurice Apeang via 2nd round KO, which resulted in his retirement from boxing with a record of 42-11.
Despite his short career, Lionel Rose's name will always be associated with Australia's best boxers, and his legacy is still felt to this day in the boxing community.
