Rick Lockridge was an American professional boxer who competed in the sport for more than 13 years: from 1978 to 1992. He had an impressive career that included 53 fights, 44 wins, and 36 KO wins. He had three world titles and made four title defenses. Here's a closer look at some of his career highlights.
Lockridge began his professional boxing debut against Tony Reed when he was 19, and he won that match via a 2nd round TKO. He then proceeded to win 15 consecutive fights, with 13 of those wins coming via stoppage.
Lockridge had his first world-title fight when he was 21. He had a total of six losses in title fights and three losses in non-title fights. His very first loss was against Eusebio Pedroza via a 15-round split-decision. Pedroza was the WBA champion at the time.
He then won three world titles at super-featherweight. One of his most remarkable fights was when he defeated Roger Mayweather in February 1984. He won the WBA and The Ring super-featherweight title by knocking out Mayweather in the first round.
Lockridge's successful WBA and The Ring runs came to a sudden halt on April 24, 1983. Eusebio Pedroza regained his titles in a 15-round unanimous decision match against Lockridge.
In August 1986, Lockridge competed for the WBC super-featherweight title against Julio César Chávez. Although he lost via a 12-round majority decision, the match was closely contested, and Lockridge showed his mettle in a thrilling bout.
One of his notable victories was winning the IBF super-featherweight title against Johnny De La Rosa in October 1987. Lockridge defended his IBF super-featherweight title six times before losing it to Tony Lopez in 1989.
Lockridge's last professional fight took place when he was 33 years old. He lost a non-title bout with Sharmba Mitchell by 10 round unanimous decision. He officially retired with a record of 44-9, comprising 36 knockout wins and nine losses, one of which was a loss via KO.
Lockridge had an exciting boxing career with many great moments. His record speaks for itself, exemplifying his discipline, hard work, dedication and passion for his craft. He will be remembered for his notable fights and victories in the ring.
