On June 7, 1987, at the age of 24, Paz won his first world title by defeating Greg Haugen via a 15 round unanimous decision. The fight was held in Providence, Rhode Island, Paz's birthplace, making his victory much sweeter. With this win, he earned the title of IBF lightweight world champion, making history as one of the youngest boxers to win a world title.
