Zsolt Erdei is a Hungarian former professional boxer born on 31 May 1974 in Budapest, Hungary. Erdei's professional boxing career lasted for over 13 years, starting in 2000 and ending in 2014. Throughout his career, he had 35 fights, out of which he won 34 and lost just one, with no draws or no-contests. He won 18 of his fights via knockout and did not lose any fight by knockout.
Erdei competed in two weight classes, namely the light-heavyweight and cruiserweight, in which he held world championships. He won world titles for the first time after 18 professional fights at the age of 29 against Julio César González in a 12-round unanimous decision on January 17, 2004. This victory made him the WBO light-heavyweight world champion, and he successfully defended the title 11 consecutive times against ten different opponents. Additionally, Erdei won the WBC cruiserweight title in November 2009 by defeating Giacobbe Fragomeni.
Erdei is the first boxer from Hungary to win world titles in two weight divisions. He also won a bronze medal in the middleweight division at the 2000 Summer Olympics as an amateur. His boxing nickname is Madár, which means "bird" in English. Erdei's stance was orthodox, and he had a reach of 183 cm (72 in) and a height of 1.78 m (5 ft 10 in).
Starting his professional career in December 2000 at the age of 26, Erdei defeated Philip Houthoofdt via first-round TKO, starting a winning streak that lasted 32 more consecutive fights, including 17 stoppages. Some of Erdei's best fights and notable victories include wins over Byron Mitchell, Danny Santiago, Julio César González, Paul Murdoch, Giacobbe Fragomeni, Mehdi Sahnoune, and Samson Onyango.
Despite his extraordinary success, Erdei had just a single loss in his professional boxing career, which was against Denis Grachev via a 10-round split decision on March 30, 2013. This loss ended his winning streak of 33 fights, making Grachev the only boxer to beat Erdei in his professional career.
Erdei's last professional fight was a non-title bout against Shalva Jomardashvili on March 9, 2014, in which he won by a 10-round unanimous decision. Erdei retired from professional boxing with a record of 34-1, which included 18 knockout wins and two title wins.
Zsolt Erdei will be remembered as one of the greatest boxers in Hungary's history. He proved his expertise, authoritativeness, trustworthiness during his career and achieved legendary status in the sport of boxing.
