Bermane Stiverne is one of the most prominent boxers in the heavyweight division with a professional career that spanned over a decade. Stiverne made his professional debut against Roy Matthews in July 2005 at the age of 26, and he went on to become a household name in the boxing world with his impressive performances in the ring.

A towering figure at 6 ft 2 inches with a reach of 77 inches, Stiverne possesses a wealth of experience with a professional record of 25-5-1. He has won 21 of those bouts by KO, and his remarkable knockout power has become his signature asset in the ring. Although Stiverne is currently on a three-fight losing streak, his record remains impressive, and he has had several memorable moments in his career in the ring.

Stiverne fought in a total of 32 fights, with 25 wins, five losses, and one draw in his stellar career. Two of his losses were in title bouts, while the rest were in non-title bouts. Stiverne has suffered three losses via knockout, and he won one world title at the heavyweight division.

Early Career

Stiverne turned pro under the tutelage of renowned promoter Don King, and he started his career with a bang by defeating his first twelve opponents with his favored left hook. However, he suffered his first defeat in his thirteenth fight against Demetrice King, who stopped him with a 4th round TKO.

Nonetheless, Stiverne bounced back from his first career defeat and went on an 11-fight winning streak, all but one of which were won via stoppage.

In January 2011, Stiverne fought and knocked out Kertson Manswell in just two rounds. The victory earned him the vacant WBC International, vacant WBC USNBC, and vacant WBA Fedelatin heavyweight titles. He then fought Ray Austin on June 25, 2011, for the vacant WBC Silver heavyweight title, which he won by a 10-round TKO.

The win over Austin positioned Stiverne as the mandatory challenger for the WBC heavyweight championship, then held by the legendary Vitali Klitschko.

The WBC Heavyweight Champion

Stiverne won his first world title in 2014 at the age of 35, after 25 professional fights, when he faced Chris Arreola for the heavyweight WBC (vacant) title. The fight was held at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, California, and Stiverne emerged victorious, winning the title via a 6th round TKO.

The victory over Arreola cemented Stiverne's place in boxing history as he became the first Haitian-born boxer to win a world heavyweight championship. He was congratulated by notable Haitians on this accomplishment, including the President of Haiti, Michel Martelly.

As the WBC heavyweight champion, Stiverne made his first title defense against Deontay Wilder, the 2008 Olympic Games bronze medalist, on January 17, 2015. The fight was held at the Barclays Center in New York City, but Stiverne lost the fight via unanimous decision, losing his title in the process.

Stiverne became the mandatory challenger to face Alexander Povetkin for the WBC interim heavyweight title in 2016. Still, the fight was canceled after Stiverne tested positive for the banned substance methylhexaneamine. He claimed he had unknowingly ingested a supplement that contained the banned substance, and the WBC fined him $75,000 for the infraction.

Post Title Reign

After his defeat to Wilder, Stiverne remained largely inactive, with only two bouts in nearly three years before a rematch with Wilder in 2017, for the WBC Heavyweight title. Wilder knocked Stiverne out unconscious in the first round.

In 2019, Stiverne faced undefeated British heavyweight contender Joe Joyce (7-0, 7 KOs) on the undercard of Chris Eubank Jr. vs. James DeGale. The fight was stopped by the referee in the 6th round, with Stiverne losing by TKO.

His last fight was a non-title bout against American boxer Jonathan Guidry on January 21, 2023. Stiverne lost the fight via unanimous decision.

Career Summary

Throughout his career, Stiverne had a total of 31 fights, with 25 wins, five losses, and one draw. He won 21 of those fights via knockout and lost three by knockout. He won one world title at the heavyweight division and had no title defenses. Nonetheless, his remarkable victory over Chris Arreola in 2014 will remain his career highlight.

Stiverne's notable victories include wins against Chris Arreola, Kertson Manswell, Derric Rossy, Ray Austin, Robert Hawkins, and Lyle McDowell.

In conclusion, Bermane Stiverne has made an indelible mark in boxing history, especially in the heavyweight division, with his remarkable power and impressive victories. His professional record speaks for itself, and while he may have gone through some ups and downs in his career, his story remains inspiring and worthy of recognition.
