Bobby Czyz is a former professional boxer who had an illustrious career that spanned over 18 years, from 1980 to 1998. Over the course of his career, Czyz fought a total of 52 fights, 44 of which he won while suffering eight defeats, all from unanimous decisions or TKOs. The American pugilist was renowned for his punching power, as he secured 28 of his wins via knockouts.
Czyz made his professional debut when he was just 18 years old on April 24, 1980, defeating Hank Whitmore via a first-round KO. He got his first taste of a world championship title fight at the age of 24 on September 6, 1986, when he won the IBF light-heavyweight title by defeating Slobodan Kacar via 5th round TKO.
Throughout his career, Czyz had a total of two world championship titles in two weight classes. He successfully defended his light-heavyweight IBF title in five fights while securing four title-fight KO wins. Seven of his 28 KO wins occurred during his championship boxing fights.
Some of Czyz's most memorable victories include his 3rd round TKO win over Oscar Albarado on May 21, 1981, his defense of the IBF light-heavyweight title against David Sears, which he won via a 1st round TKO on December 26, 1986, and his defense against Willie Edwards, which he won via 2nd round KO on February 21, 1987.
However, Czyz's boxing career was not without its share of losses. He suffered his first professional defeat to Mustafa Hamsho via a 10th round unanimous decision in November 1982, which put an end to his 20-fight win streak. Out of his eight career losses, three were in title fights, and five were in non-title bouts. Czyz was stopped five times, three via decision and twice by TKO.
Czyz announced his retirement from professional boxing with a career record of 44-8, which included 28 KO wins, two world championship titles, and five losses via KO.
Czyz's career as a boxer was exemplary, known for his powerful punches and his ability to secure important victories when it mattered most. His boxing style and approach earned him legions of fans and secured his reputation as one of the greatest boxers of his generation.
