Boonsai Sangsurat, also known as Medgoen Singsurat, is a retired Thai professional boxer who competed from 1997 to 2011. Throughout his career, he participated in a total of 80 fights, winning 74 and losing six - all via stoppage.
Sangsurat had an impressive 20-win streak in his early career, starting with his first professional boxing debut against Roy Clave on January 30, 1997, at the age of 18. He won the fight after 6 rounds by points decision.
Moving forward, some of the most notable victories of his career include beating Manny Pacquiao on September 17, 1999, via third-round TKO, and other victories over Rodel Orais, Joel Avila, Jojo Rodrigo, Edmund Nonong Develleres, Dragon Zheng, and Leo Escobido. All of his losses during his professional boxing career came via stoppage.
Despite the setbacks, Sangsurat won two world titles at two weight classes. He secured his first world title at the age of 21 when he fought against Manny Pacquiao for the flyweight WBC (vacant) title, winning the contest via 3rd round TKO.
After his initial title win, Sangsurat went on to defend his WBC super-flyweight title on six different occasions between 2003 and 2005. His successful title defenses were against the likes of Archie Villamor, Rodel Orais, Jojo Rodrigo, Joel Avila, and Edmund Nonong Develleres, winning each of his fights via KO or TKO.
Sangsurat's second world title win was in the Bantamweight class, where he defeated undefeated Japanese boxer, Hidenobu Honda by unanimous decision on August 16, 2008.
It's important to note that Sangsurat had a non-standard boxing stance. He was an orthodox fighter with a preference for stepping to the lead foot of his opponents. This approach earned him many victories throughout his career and was something that his opponents had difficulty mitigating.
When considering the boxer's fighting statistics, Sangsurat won more than half of his fights (51) via knockout. He also faced six knockout losses, which represent his entire career defeats. Though his total professional boxing career spanned more than 14 years, he made no comebacks after his last career fight against Wanchana Pattanakarngym on June 24, 2011, where he won via a 3rd round TKO.
Overall, Sangsurat has left an indelible mark on Thai boxing history, boasting a professional boxing record of 74-6-0. His unique fighting style and impressive resume make him one of Thailand's most celebrated boxers and a worthy adversary for any competitor.
