Brandon Ríos is a retired professional boxer with a record of 35-5-1. His career spanned over 14 years, from 2004 to 2019, during which he fought a total of 41 times. Ríos won 26 fights via knockout and won one world title as the WBA lightweight world champion.
Ríos made his professional boxing debut at the age of 18 against Raul Montes in July 2004, winning via a third-round TKO. He went on to win 17 more consecutive fights, with 11 of them being won through stoppage. This impressive start marked him out as a rising star in the sport, and his popularity only grew as he continued to excel in the ring.
His first world title fight came in February 2011, against Miguel Acosta for the lightweight WBA title. After 27 professional fights, Ríos was finally getting the chance to prove himself as a world-class boxer. He did just that, defeating Acosta via a 10th round TKO to become the lightweight champion of the world. This was undoubtedly the highlight of his career, and it cemented his place among boxing's elite.
Ríos' world title reign was short but impressive. He successfully defended his title once against Urbano Antillón, winning via a 3rd round KO in July 2011. Sadly, he lost his title in his next fight against Richard Abril in April 2012 via unanimous decision. The fight was hotly disputed, and many felt that Ríos had done enough to retain his title. However, things didn't go his way on the night, and he had to concede his belt to his opponent.
Despite losing his title, Ríos remained a popular and respected fighter in the sport. He had many notable victories throughout his career, including wins over Aaron Herrera, Miguel Acosta, Ramón Álvarez, and Mike Alvarado. These fights were some of the highlights of his career and showed just what he was capable of when he stepped into the ring.
Of course, no boxer can go through their career undefeated, and Ríos was no exception. He suffered his first loss against Mike Alvarado via a 12 round unanimous decision in March 2013, which ended his 31-fight win streak. He has been stopped two times and lost three times via decision. These losses were undoubtedly setbacks for Ríos, but they never dampened his spirits or his determination to succeed. He continued to fight with dedication and passion, always giving his all every time he stepped into the ring.
Ríos' last professional fight was a non-title bout against Mexican boxer Humberto Soto in February 2019. He lost the fight via a 12 round unanimous decision, and he decided to retire from professional boxing shortly after. Despite the loss, Ríos was still held in high esteem by fans and peers alike, and his contributions to the sport were widely recognized.
Brandon Ríos may no longer be an active boxer, but his legacy in the sport will live on for years to come. He was a fierce competitor, a talented fighter, and a true warrior in the ring. His record of 35-5-1 speaks for itself, and his many notable victories and world title win will never be forgotten. Fans of the sport will always remember Ríos as one of the greats, and his contributions to boxing will not be forgotten any time soon.
