Carl Thompson is a former professional boxer who had an impressive career spanning over 17 years, from 1988 to 2005. During this time, he fought a total of 40 times, winning 34 fights and losing six. His record included 25 knockout wins and five losses via knockout, with no draws or no-contests.
Thompson had his professional boxing debut against Darren McKenna at the age of 24 on June 6, 1988. He won via a 2nd round TKO, and continued with seven consecutive wins, including four wins via stoppage.
In his first world title fight on June 10, 1995, Thompson lost to Ralf Rocchigiani via 11th round TKO. He was fighting for the WBO (vacant) cruiserweight title. However, he came back stronger and won the WBO cruiserweight title on October 4, 1997, defeating Rocchigiani via 12 round split-decision.
Thompson successfully defended the WBO cruiserweight title twice. On April 18, 1998, he defeated Chris Eubank via 12 round unanimous decision. Later on, July 18, 1998, Thompson defeated Eubank again, this time via 9th round RTD.
Some of Thompson's other notable victories include wins against Albert Call, Keith McMurray, Uriah Grant, David Haye, and Terry Dunstan. He suffered his first loss against Crawford Ashley via 6th round TKO on October 31, 1989. However, it was his loss to Ralf Rocchigiani that sparked his determination to win the WBO cruiserweight title.
Thompson retired from professional boxing with a record of 34-6 and one title win. He made great contributions to the sport and will be remembered as one of the finest cruisers in history.
Throughout his career, Thompson was known for his incredible power and punching ability. Of his total 34 wins, 25 of them came from knockouts. However, he also suffered five losses via knockout, demonstrating the high-risk nature that comes with competing in the sport of boxing.
Despite being known for his power, Thompson was also a skilled tactician in the ring. He knew when to strike and when to wait for his opponent to make a mistake. This patience often allowed him to dominate his opponents and win fights with ease.
Thompson's biggest highlight was winning the WBO cruiserweight title from Ralf Rocchigiani on October 4, 1997. This was an incredible accomplishment, especially considering his previous loss to Rocchigiani just a couple of years before. He showed great resilience and determination to come back stronger and defeat Rocchigiani, proving to the boxing world that he was a force to be reckoned with.
Thompson's career in boxing took him all over the world, and he fought in some of the biggest arenas in the sport. He was always a crowd favorite, with his explosive style and unwavering determination to succeed.
All in all, Carl Thompson is a true legend of the sport of boxing. His record speaks for itself, and his contributions to the sport will never be forgotten. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest cruisers of all time, and his legacy will live on through his many fans and the boxing community at large.
