On August 4, 2017, just three professional fights into her career, Shields had her first world-title fight against Nikki Adler for the super-middleweight WBC and IBF titles. She won the fight via a fifth-round TKO, becoming the super-middleweight world champion. Shields has gone ahead to become a three-time undisputed world champion at middleweight and super-welterweight, and a four-time unified world champion at super-welterweight, middleweight (2x), and super-middleweight, winning 13 world titles across three weight classes.

Shields has been an exceptional athlete, with her amateur boxing career record standing at 64 wins (5 by knockout) and just one loss. She won her first Olympic gold medal in the women's middleweight division at the 2012 Olympics and repeated the feat at the 2016 Olympics, making her the first American boxer to win consecutive Olympic medals.

Shields is known for her exemplary skill set, which includes a powerful left hook, quick lateral movement, and excellent head movement, powered by the Jackson Wink MMA Academy team. Shields is considered the best active female boxer, pound-for-pound, by ESPN and The Ring.
