Corrie Sanders, one of the greatest heavyweight boxers from South Africa, was born on January 7, 1966, in Pretoria, South Africa. With a professional career that spanned over 18 years, from 1989 to 2008, he fought a total of 46 fights, winning 42 of those fights with an impressive 31 knockouts.
Corrie Sanders made his professional boxing debut against King Kong Dyubele on April 2, 1989, at the age of 23. Sanders won his first fight via a first-round technical knockout (TKO) and went on to win 22 more consecutive fights after the debut, 15 of which were won by stoppage.
In his first world title bout, Corrie Sanders won the WBO heavyweight title against Wladimir Klitschko on March 8, 2003, at the age of 37 after 40 professional fights. Sanders defeated Klitschko in the second round of the match via TKO and became the first South African to hold the heavyweight championship in 44 years.
Sanders' stunning performance at the heavyweight title fight cemented his place in boxing history. Throughout his career, he fought some of the best in the business, including notable victories over Hall-of-Famer Wladimir Klitschko, Carlos de León, Al Cole, Alexey Varakin, Colin Wilson, Bobby Czyz, and Daniel Bispo.
However, despite his incredible record, Sanders had his fair share of setbacks, suffering four losses in his professional career – one of which was in a title bout and three in non-title bouts. All of his losses came via stoppage, and his first loss came against Nate Tubbs on May 21, 1994, via a second-round knockout, ending his 23-fight win streak.
While he did not have a long reign as a heavyweight champion, Sanders made history by defeating Klitschko to become the WBO heavyweight world champion. Corrie Sanders did not have any title defenses during his time as champion, but his fights will go down in history as some of the most memorable moments in boxing.
Corrie Sanders' last professional fight was against Osborne Machimana at 42 years old on February 2, 2008. Unfortunately, Sanders lost the fight via TKO in the first round. Despite the loss, Sanders left a lasting impression on the boxing world and the South African community.
Although Sanders' career may have been short-lived, his impact on the sport of boxing will never be forgotten. His incredible record speaks for itself, and his performances in the ring were always a spectacle to behold. Sanders' legacy as a heavyweight boxer will continue to live on, and he will always be remembered as one of the greatest boxers to come out of South Africa.
