Eddie Davis was a professional boxer who competed in the light-heavyweight division from 1975 to 1987, amassing a record of 34 wins, 6 losses, 1 draw, and 0 no-contests. He had 20 knockout wins and suffered 5 losses via knockout during his career. Davis may not have won any world titles or defended any championships, but he made a lasting impression on the boxing community with his gritty performances and notable victories.
Davis' professional debut came on September 12, 1975, against Otis Gordon, whom he defeated via second-round technical knockout (TKO). After five consecutive wins, including three stoppages, Davis suffered his first defeat via seventh-round TKO at the hands of Marvin Johnson on April 3, 1978. Despite the setback, Davis rebounded with several impressive victories, such as his 10-round unanimous decision over former world title challenger Rudy Robles on September 25, 1979.
Davis' biggest fight came on November 20, 1982, when he faced off against Dwight Muhammad Qawi for the WBC and The Ring light-heavyweight titles. Qawi, a future Hall of Famer, was a significant favorite going into the fight, but Davis gave him all he could handle before ultimately succumbing to an 11th-round TKO. The fight showed that Davis could hang with the best in the world, and even in defeat, he gained the respect of many in the boxing world.
Throughout his career, Davis faced many tough opponents and had some memorable victories. One of his most impressive performances was his eight-round unanimous decision over Jack Johnson, the nephew of the legendary Jack Johnson, on August 7, 1986. Davis outboxed and outworked Johnson to earn the victory, which helped cement his legacy as a skilled and crafty fighter.
Despite never winning a world title, Davis continued to fight tough opponents throughout his career. He suffered his last defeat via second-round TKO at the hands of Donny Lalonde in a bout for the vacant light-heavyweight WBC title on November 27, 1987. With that loss, Davis decided to hang up his gloves and retire from professional boxing.
Eddie Davis may not be a household name like some of his contemporaries, but he was an excellent fighter who faced many of the best fighters in his weight class. His record of 34 wins against only 6 losses, with 20 wins coming by knockout, is nothing to scoff at, and his legacy as a tough and skilled fighter is secure.
