Edison Miranda, born on January 7, 1981, is a retired Colombian professional boxer with an impressive record of 36 wins, 11 losses, and no draws. The Panamanian boxer was one of the most dangerous contenders in the middleweight category due to his high knockout-to-win ratio which stands at 31. His career spanned over 20 years from 2001 to 2021, where he competed in five different weight classes, including middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight, cruiserweight, and heavyweight.
Edison Miranda made his professional debut in a fight against Jose Chiquillo on March 16, 2001, at the age of 20, where he won via a first-round TKO. He went on to win 25 consecutive fights, including 22 wins via a stoppage. On September 23, 2006, he had his first shot at the title fight against Arthur Abraham for the IBF title at the age of 25 after 26 professional fights. Miranda lost to Arthur Abraham via 12 round unanimous decision.
Miranda was a versatile fighter as he fought in different categories, including middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight, cruiserweight, and heavyweight. He had notable victories over Joey Vegas, Willie Gibbs, Manuel Esparza, David Banks, Henry Porras, Kariz Kariuki, and Daniel Noguera, among others.
Edison Miranda had an illustrious career that is remembered for his formidable punching power that generated a high knockout ratio. He had a total of 11 losses in his professional boxing career, with nine in non-title bouts, and two in title bouts. His first loss was against Arthur Abraham via 12 round unanimous decision on September 23, 2006. It ended his 26-fight win streak. He lost six fights via decision and was stopped five times.
After an impressive career, Miranda retired from professional boxing with a record of 36-11, including 31 knockout wins and five losses via knockout. Miranda is an example of pure talent, persistence and focused determination, mixed with hard work and dedication, that led him to become one of the most respected and celebrated boxers of his era in a sport that values these qualities.
The Colombian boxer was known for his punching power, fast hands, and striking accuracy. He is also known by his nickname, "Pantera," which is Spanish for Panther. Miranda stands at 5 feet 10 inches (178 cm) and had a reach of 77+1⁄2 inches (197 cm). He fought in an orthodox stance and was versatile enough to compete in different weight classes.
Miranda's journey as a boxer wasn't straightforward. In March 2002, he became a professional boxer, but his journey was only halfway, literally. He arrived in the Dominican Republic and was promised an opportunity to go to the United States and compete against the top middleweight fighters in the world. However, he was left homeless, hungry, and devastated by an unfair contract that caused him to return to Barranquilla, Colombia, on December 24, 2004. With the support of friends, he signed with Warrior's Boxing Promotions and competed in his first American fight in Hollywood, Florida on May 20, 2005.
One of Miranda's most notable fights was against Howard Eastman, which was held on March 24, 2006, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Miranda got off to a slow start but showed his tremendous power when consecutive right hands hurt Eastman in the fifth round. The experienced Eastman survived the round and came back strong by hurting Miranda in the next round. Miranda kept throwing his right hand, and in the seventh, he had Eastman hurt badly with a clean right cross to the jaw, followed by a left uppercut, and then a vicious right uppercut that nailed Eastman under the chin. The referee stopped the fight, making Miranda the first man to stop Eastman. The victory made Miranda the mandatory challenger for IBF Middleweight Champion Arthur Abraham.
Miranda fought Arthur Abraham on September 23, 2006, in Wetzlar, Germany. The fight was not without controversy. After three competitive rounds, Miranda broke Abraham's jaw with a right hand in round four. In round five, Miranda head-butted Abraham on the right side of his face. Abraham was seen turning away hurt with his mouth agape. Referee Randy Neumann stopped the fight, and during the five-minute break, the doctor recommended that the fight be stopped due to what he saw as a broken jaw from a legal punch. The referee decided to continue the fight and deducted two points from Miranda. Abraham fought the remainder of the fight with a visibly broken jaw that was grossly swollen at the end of the fight. In the seventh round, Miranda was docked two more points for low blows. Then in the eleventh round, Miranda landed another low blow and the referee took another point from him. Miranda lost the fight by unanimous decision, although he would have lost even without the deduction of any points (although by Majority Decision).
On December 16, 2006, Miranda had a fantastic fight against Willie Gibbs in Miami, Florida. Miranda landed a massive right hand that badly hurt Gibbs, causing him to stagger back into the ropes. Miranda then unloaded a volley of punches, concluding with a right hand followed by a left hook that connected flush on Gibbs' chin, sending him down and out in the first round.
The loss to Kelly Pavlik was a significant blow to Miranda's career. Nevertheless, he showed tremendous courage, resilience and was not deterred. He moved up to super middleweight and had successful fights against Henry Porras on October 30, 2007, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Miranda started slowly, but soon found both his range and rhythm. Porras was a game opponent in the first two rounds, but as Miranda became more comfortable, he found openings in Porras’ defense. Miranda unloaded a powerful barrage of punches on a defenseless Porras to force the referee to step in and stop the fight in the fifth round.
On January 11, 2008, Miranda fought against David Banks and won via a third-round KO at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and
