Erickson Lubin is an American professional boxer in the light-middleweight category. Born on October 1, 1995, in Orlando, Florida, The Hammer, as he is also known, began his professional career on November 26, 2013, when he defeated Eric De Jesus via first-round technical knockout (TKO). As of January 2022, Lubin is the fourth-best active super welterweight according to The Ring magazine, third by the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board, and seventh according to BoxRec.
Lubin has so far had twenty-six fights, winning twenty-four of them, with seventeen of those wins coming through knockouts. He has lost twice, both of them not through decisions but via knockouts. Lubin has yet to have a draw or no-contest.
One of his most significant moments came at the age of nineteen on November 14, 2014, when he fought Norberto Gonzalez for the WBC (vacant) title. Lubin emerged victorious and became the super-welterweight champion of the world, making him the youngest American boxer to win the title at the time. However, to date, he has never defended his championship.
After winning eighteen fights in his professional career, Lubin faced his first defeat when he lost against Jermell Charlo via a first-round knockout on October 14, 2017. Lubin rebounded from his loss to Charlo and had significant victories from 2019 to 2021.
He has since gone on to win six of his last seven fights, with the most recent one being a non-title bout against fellow American boxer Sebastian Fundora on April 9, 2022, at the Virgin Hotels in Paradise, Nevada. Lubin lost the fight via a ninth-round TKO, which put him on a one-fight losing streak as he currently has a record of 24-2.
Early Professional Career
Lubin made his professional debut on November 26, 2013, when he was eighteen years old, facing off against Eric De Jesus. The contest ended with Lubin defeating Jesus via first-round technical knockout.
From there, he went on to have seventeen more consecutive victories, with twelve coming through stoppages, including Jorge Cota, Silverio Ortiz, Juan Ubaldo Cabrera, Daniel Sandoval, Alexis Camacho, Zakaria Attou, and Orlando Lora. His 18-fight win streak ended when he faced Jermell Charlo in a title bout in 2017.
World Title Win and Challenges
Lubin's first shot at the world title came in November 2014 when he met Norberto Gonzalez for the WBC (vacant) title. Lubin won the fight via unanimous decision, making him the super-welterweight world champion at the time.
After his title win, Lubin went on to become the mandatory challenger for Jermell Charlo, the WBC super-welterweight champion at the time. Lubin's first attempt at winning the WBC super-welterweight belt fell short when Charlo took him out via a knockout in the first round.
However, he bounced back from the defeat and won his next three fights, all via decisions. The victory, though his opponents' records were underwhelming, placed him in a position to fight for the WBC Silver super welterweight title against Terrell Gausha, who was ranked no. 6 by the WBA at super welterweight and was a former world title challenger. Lubin won the fight via a unanimous decision, winning the WBC Silver super-welterweight title.
Jeison Rosario, who was ranked no. 3 by the WBC, no. 6 by the WBA, no. 10 by the IBF, and no. 4 by The Ring at super welterweight, faced off against Lubin in a WBC final eliminator on June 26, 2021, with the winner earning a shot at the WBC title. In the sixth round, Lubin sent the former unified world champion to the canvas, resulting in a knockout victory for The Hammer, making him the WBC mandatory.
Fight Against Sebastian Fundora
On April 9, 2022, Erickson Lubin faced fellow American boxer Sebastian Fundora at the Virgin Hotels in Paradise, Nevada. The fight was a non-title bout held in the super-welterweight category, going over twelve rounds. Lubin had a lot to prove after his defeat in his last fight, and he was desperate to get back to winning ways.
However, things didn't work out the way Lubin hoped, and he lost the fight via a ninth-round TKO. Fundora stopped Lubin from winning by landing a series of hurtful punches, which prompted the referee to stop the fight. Consequently, Lubin lost two of his professional fights via knockouts.
Conclusion
Erickson Lubin is a super-welterweight who has had an impressive record in his professional career, with twenty-four wins and only two losses, both of them via knockouts. After his initial world title win against Norberto Gonzalez, he became a mandatory challenger for Jermell Charlo but lost the title bout via a first-round knockout.
However, he bounced back from the defeat and won his next three bouts via decisions. He won the WBC Silver super-welterweight title against Terrell Gausha and followed up with a WBC final eliminator win against former unified world champion Jeison Rosario.
Although he lost his most recent non-title bout against Sebastian Fundora, it is clear that Lubin is one of the most skilled boxers in his weight category. Perhaps another world title win is on the horizon for The Hammer, but time will tell.
