Freddie Little may not be a household name in the world of boxing, but his achievements in the ring cannot be overlooked. A professional fighter from 1957 to 1972, Little earned a record of 51 wins, 6 losses, and no draws, with 31 of his victories coming by way of knockout. He held two world titles and successfully defended them twice, making him a respected and accomplished figure in the sport.
Little made his professional debut at the age of 20 in 1957, taking on Joe Muscato and winning by 1st round KO. He went on to win ten consecutive fights, including eight by stoppage, before suffering his first loss against Norris Burse via 5th round KO on July 7, 1958. This defeat marked the end of an 11-fight win streak for Little.
Despite this early setback, Little continued to persevere and improve as a fighter. He had his first world title fight at the age of 31 on October 3, 1967, after 40 professional fights, against Kim Ki-soo for the WBA and WBC titles. Although Little lost to Ki-soo via 15 round split-decision, he proved himself to be a formidable contender and gained valuable experience that would benefit him in future fights.
Little's most significant career highlight came in 1969 when he became the undisputed super-welterweight world champion. He won the vacant title by defeating Stanley Hayward via 15 round unanimous decision, and he successfully defended the belt twice before losing it to Carmelo Bossi in 1970 via decision. His career also included a victory over Hisao Minami in which he won the fight via 2nd round KO.
Throughout his career, Little had a total of six losses, two of which were in title bouts and four in non-title bouts. He suffered his first loss against Norris Burse, as previously mentioned, and was stopped only once in his career. Five of his losses came via decision, and he never suffered a loss via disqualification.
Little fought a total of 58 times during his professional career, with his last fight being a non-title bout against Billy Walker on July 6, 1972. He won the fight via 6th round RTD, after which he retired from professional boxing with a record of 51-6-0, including 31 knockout wins and one loss via knockout.
Despite his achievements in the ring, Little's legacy has been overshadowed by some of the more prominent names in boxing during his era. However, his skill and tenacity as a fighter cannot be denied. He was a true champion who consistently proved himself against tough opponents, earning his place as one of the finest fighters of his generation.
