Georges Carpentier was a French boxer, actor, and World War I pilot, whose professional boxing career spanned over 17 years, from 1908 to 1926. He is considered one of the best boxers of his generation and is renowned for his excellent boxing skills, exceptional speed, and extreme punching power. Carpentier had a remarkable record of 89 wins, 16 losses, six draws, and one no-contest, and retired with 57 knockout wins and just ten losses via KO.
He competed across multiple weight classes throughout his career, including welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight. Despite his achievements, Carpentier's defining moment came on October 12, 1920, when he challenged Battling Levinsky for the NYSAC light-heavyweight title. Carpentier won the fight with a fourth-round knockout, thereby becoming a world champion.
Some of Carpentier's notable wins include victories over four Hall-of-Famers such as Battling Levinsky, Jeff Smith, Harry Lewis, and Charles Ledoux, Ted Lewis, Bombardier Billy Wells, Joe Beckett, Pat O'Keeffe, George Cook, and Jim Sullivan. In addition, he won the NBA and NYSAC light-heavyweight titles, and made one successful defense of both titles when he defeated Ted Lewis on May 11, 1922, via a first-round knockout.
His boxing careerrecorded 16 losses, two of which came via knockout and the remaining 14 via decision, and his first loss was to Ed Salmon via 18th-round TKO on November 30, 1908. Carpentier's last professional fight was a non-title bout against Rocco Stramaglia at the age of 32, which he won via a third-round knockout.
Carpentier was known for maintaining an orthodox stance, which he used to his advantage during his career. He was a skilled technical boxer, and his strength was his speed, which he used to dodge his opponents' punches effectively. Carpentier was also renowned for his punching power, and he knocked out 57 opponents throughout his career.
He had a remarkably long and impressive career, which started when he made his professional boxing debut against Ed Salmon at the age of 14. Despite his young age, he defeated Salmon via a 13-round disqualification. Throughout his career, he fought a total of 112 times, including two world championship fights, one of which he won against Battling Levinsky, and another he lost to Jack Dempsey.
Carpentier's boxing career was not his only achievement; he was also a proficient aviator and served his country as a fighter pilot in World War I. As an actor, he appeared in several films, including the French film "The Idol of Paris" and the 1928 Hollywood silent film "The Night Bird".
On October 28, 1975, Georges Carpentier passed away at the age of 81 in Paris, France. He left behind an extraordinary legacy as one of the most skilled boxers of his generation, a war hero, and a talented actor. In recognition of his impressive career, Carpentier was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in 1991, cementing his position in the history of the sport as one of the greats.
