Glen Johnson, a retired Jamaican professional boxer, had a successful career spanning more than two decades. He fought a total of 77 times, winning 54 matches and losing 21, with two draws and no no-contests. Johnson was known for his notable victories over several world-class boxers.
Johnson made his professional boxing debut in 1993 at the age of 24, winning against Yurek Del Rio via a 1st round TKO. After his debut, he won an astonishing 31 consecutive fights, including 21 wins via stoppage.
Johnson's first world title fight was for the IBF middleweight title against Bernard Hopkins in 1997. Although he fought well, he lost in the 11th round via TKO. This defeat may have been a setback, but Johnson used it as motivation to come back stronger next time.
In 2004, Johnson won his first light-heavyweight world title, the IBF, by defeating Clinton Woods via a 12 round unanimous decision. Later that year, he defended his title for the first time against the former heavyweight champion, Roy Jones Jr., by winning via a 9th round knockout, which was one of the highlights of his career.
Johnson's career highlight came in December 2004 when he won the prestigious The Ring light-heavyweight title from Antonio Tarver via a 12 round split-decision. This victory was significant because it made him the undisputed light-heavyweight champion at the time.
Johnson continued to win several notable victories in his career, including wins over Yusaf Mack, Clinton Woods, Allan Green and Roy Jones Jr. His victory over Yusaf Mack in 2010 via a 6th round TKO was particularly impressive. It showed that even at the age of 41, he still had the power and stamina to compete at the highest levels of the sport.
Johnson's last fight was on August 15, 2015, against Avni Yıldırım in a non-title bout. Unfortunately, Johnson lost the fight via a 10 round unanimous decision, bringing an end to his exceptional career as a boxer. But the Jamaican boxer left behind an incredible legacy, which will always be remembered by the boxing community.
Although Johnson won more than half of his total fights, he also suffered 21 defeats during his professional career. Eight of these losses were in title bouts, and 13 were in non-title fights. Johnson's first defeat, which also ended his 32-game-winning streak, came against Bernard Hopkins in 1997 via an 11th round TKO. Johnson was stopped only twice in his career and lost 19 times via unanimous or split decisions. These defeats were not enough to tarnish his accomplishments in the ring, as he was still considered a formidable opponent and a respected member of the boxing community.
One of Johnson's most remarkable accomplishments was winning two world titles at light-heavyweight. He had a successful career, which earned him respect and admiration from fans and fellow boxers alike. Johnson was known for his toughness, determination, and unwavering will to win. He never gave up, even in the face of adversity, and was always willing to take on any opponent, no matter how formidable they were.
In conclusion, Glen Johnson was a remarkable boxer who had an exceptional career. His accomplishments in the ring will always be remembered, and he will forever be a legend of the sport. Johnson's determination and will to win are an inspiration to many young boxers, and his legacy lives on through them. He may have retired from professional boxing, but his spirit and passion for the sport will continue to resonate with fans and fighters for years to come.
