Armstrong won the fight via sixth-round knockout to claim his first world title.
Armstrong won his second world title on May 31, 1938, when he beat Barney Ross via a unanimous 15-round decision to become the NBA and The Ring welterweight champion. He successfully defended his welterweight titles against several notable opponents, including Ceferino Garcia, Al Manfredo, and Bobby Pacho. Armstrong also won the NBA and The Ring lightweight titles on March 16, 1939, when he defeated Lew Feldman via first-round knockout.
