If there's one word that describes Iván "Iron Boy" Calderón, it's "undefeated." With a whopping record of 35 wins (6 by KO), one draw, and only three losses (all by KO), Calderón is undoubtedly one of the best strawweight boxers of all time. He's won three world titles in two weight classes, defending his titles 16 times with two KO wins in title fights. Calderón's career lasted over 11 years, from 2001 to 2012 - a period of pure boxing excellence that saw him dominate the sport and establish himself as one of Puerto Rico's greatest boxing champions.
Calderón made a stunning debut into professional boxing at the age of 26 when he fought against Sergio Diaz on February 17, 2001. He defeated Diaz via 1st round TKO, and this was the start of a successful 32-fight winning streak. From there, Calderón went on to win 31 more consecutive fights, including five wins via stoppage. However, his first world title bout was still a few fights away.
Calderón had his first world title fight against Eduardo Ray Marquez for the strawweight WBO title on May 3, 2003. This was only his 15th professional fight, but he still managed to defeat Marquez via 9th round technical decision, making him the strawweight champion of the world. Calderón would go on to win two more strawweight titles in 2006 and 2008, cementing his place as a boxing legend.
Throughout his career, Calderón faced some of the best boxers in the strawweight division, including Rodel Mayol, Edgar Cardenas, Hugo Cázares, Noel Tunacao, Nelson Dieppa, Miguel Tellez, and Jesus Iribe. His victories over these boxers further solidified his status as a world-class boxer. However, Calderón had three losses in his professional boxing career, and unfortunately, all of them were in title bouts.
The first time Calderón suffered a loss was against Giovani Segura via 8th round KO on August 28, 2010. This loss ended his 34-fight winning streak, a remarkable feat that few boxers have achieved. He suffered his other two losses against Roman Gonzalez and Moisés Fuentes, both in title fights. Despite these losses, Calderón continued to be a resilient boxer who always fought fiercely in the ring.
Calderón's last professional fight was on October 6, 2012, against Moisés Fuentes for Fuentes' strawweight WBO title. Unfortunately, he lost the fight via 5th round TKO, bringing an end to his glorious career. Calderón retired from professional boxing with a record of 35-3-1, which included six knockout wins and three losses via knockout, and three title wins. His legacy, however, lives on.
Calderón's success is not just attributed to his impressive statistics but also to his unique fighting style. Calderón was a crafty, quick-footed boxer who always came to fights prepared. His ability to outmaneuver his opponents and counter their attacks with precise, lightning-fast punches made him a challenging opponent to face. Calderón was a master of footwork, and his ability to create angles and evade punches was unparalleled. Additionally, Calderón was known for his mental toughness in the ring, which allowed him to stay focused even when facing adversity.
In conclusion, Iván Calderón was one of the greatest boxers of his generation, known for his impressive record, his unique fighting style, and his mental toughness. He is a Puerto Rican boxing legend who has inspired many young boxers to follow in his footsteps. Calderón's legacy is not only marked by his successful career but also by the love and admiration he has earned from boxing fans worldwide.
