Jack Sharkey is a retired professional boxer who had a career that spanned over 12 years. Throughout his time in the ring, he achieved a total of 55 fights, winning 38 of them, losing 14, with three draws and no no-contests. Additionally, he won 13 of his fights via knockout, and he had three total title wins. Sharkey had his first professional fight on January 29, 1924, at the age of 21, where he won via 1st round TKO against Billy Muldoon.
Sharkey's first world-title fight came at the age of 27. He had already fought in 43 professional bouts before facing Max Schmeling on June 12, 1930, for the NBA, NYSAC (vacant), and The Ring titles. Unfortunately, Sharkey lost the fight by 4 round undefined. Although he lost that title fight, Sharkey won a world title at heavyweight, and more information about Sharkey's world title defenses and wins can be found in the section titled "Jack Sharkey World Titles."
Sharkey had 14 losses throughout his career, with two of those losses being in title bouts and the other 12 in non-title bouts. His first professional loss was against Eddie Ricord via 10 round PTS on March 18, 1924. Of his 14 losses, Sharkey was stopped four times, while the other ten losses came from losing via decision. More information about his losses can be found in the section titled "All of Jack Sharkey's losses."
While Sharkey did not necessarily have the most impressive career in terms of his performances in the ring, he had some noteworthy fights against other Hall-of-Famers, such as Max Schmeling, Tommy Loughran, Young Stribling, Jack Delaney, Harry Wills, and George Godfrey. Additionally, Sharkey won fights against Phil Scott, Primo Carnera, and Mike McTigue.
Sharkey's most impressive fights came on four separate occasions, highlighted in this section as "Career Highlights." On February 27, 1929, Sharkey defeated Young Stribling via 10th round PTS, which was the first impressive performance of his career. More notably, Sharkey won the NBA, NYSAC, and The Ring heavyweight titles when he beat Max Schmeling on June 21, 1932. Additionally, Sharkey had another impressive fight when he beat Primo Carnera on October 12, 1931, via 15th round unanimous decision.
Despite his successes and lackluster performances, Jack Sharkey retired from professional boxing with an impressive record of 38-14-3, which included 13 knockout wins and four losses via knockout, as well as just one title win. In recognition of his achievements, Sharkey was added to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1994.
