Joe Gans, with a professional boxing record of 157 wins, 12 losses, 22 draws, and 1 no-contest, is well-known for his exceptional defensive skills and strategic offense inside the ring. Gans stepped into the boxing ring for the first time on October 23, 1893, and fought against Buck Myers, which ended in a no-decision. However, Gans' ability to outperform his opponents was witnessed throughout his career which ran from 1893 to 1909, with his last fight against Jabez White. In this article, we'll explore Gans' illustrious career and how his fighting style made him one of the best boxers of his time.

The Maryland born boxer had incredible speed and athleticism in his fighting style, which helped him to find his feet quickly and deliver accurate punches. Gans' ability to adapt to his opponents, whether they were aggressive or more passive, allowed him to always have the upper hand. He was able to use his unbeatable defense to protect himself from blows and then launch deadly counter-attacks to defeat his adversaries.

Gans' had a total of 197 fights, with 100 KO wins marking his dominance in the ring. Despite his impressive professional record, he never won a title nor had any title defenses. It's important to note that none of Gans' 12 losses were in in title bouts.

It's worth mentioning that Gans' fighting style involved taking his time and studying his opponents to find their weaknesses. His patience and composure inside the ring made it difficult for opponents to outsmart him.

Although all of Gans' losses were in non-title bouts, it's worth analyzing some of his more significant fights. His initial fight loss was against Paul Johnson on June 27, 1894, via 5 round PTS. This loss didn't have too much of an impact on his career, as he went on to win his next 21 fights,  which included 2 wins via stoppage. His most significant accomplishment was his lightweight championship win over the Hall-of-Famer Frank Erne on May 12, 1902.

One of Gans' most notable bouts happened in September 1900, against Eddie Connolly, where he won after 10 rounds by KO. Fighting under the scorching sun and high humidity, Gans performed at his best and showcased why he was known as one of the best boxers of his time.

The fight against Battling Nelson, another Hall-of-Famer, is also worth mentioning. In their second fight, held in Goldfield Nevada on Labor Day 1908, Gans was beaten by Nelson to win the lightweight belt. He accused Nelson of cheating and the accusations were later proven to be true. Nelson was accused of "caking" or using plaster of Paris on his tapes before wrapping his hands. This was a turning point in Gans' career as his health was reduced, resulting in losing the rematch against Nelson later in 1908.

Although his last professional fight was against Jabez White on March 12, 1909, at the age of 34, Gans won it after 10 rounds by NS in a non-title bout. Despite his injury troubles and delays that kept him out of the ring for a few years, both his skillset and the intelligence in the ring made him one of the best fighters of his generation.

Gans was known for his ability to navigate through fights, to never panic, and to always find his way to victory. His calm presence in the ring, combined with his defensive style, made it difficult for opponents to get close to him. Gans would wait and study his opponents, looking for openings to land accurate punches.

On April 8th, 1910, a severely weakened Joe Gans died from tuberculosis at the young age of 35. He was inducted to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.

In conclusion, Joe Gans was one of the best boxers of his time, who, despite his short career, showed incredible skill and defensive prowess inside the ring, accumulating a record that speaks for itself. His legacy lives on and his fighting style has inspired many boxers to this day.
