José Luis Castillo, also known as "El Temible," was a Mexican boxer who competed professionally for more than 24 years, from 1990 to 2014. Standing at 5 ft 7+1⁄2 in (171 cm) with a reach of 69 in (175 cm), he fought in multiple weight classes, including Featherweight, Super featherweight, Lightweight, Light welterweight, and Welterweight. With a record of 66-13-1, including 57 knockout wins, Castillo is considered one of the best lightweights of his era, having won three world titles at that weight.

Castillo's boxing career began at the age of 16 on May 4, 1990, when he defeated Ricardo Contreras via 2nd round KO. He then went on to win an additional 17 consecutive fights, with 16 wins via stoppage. Castillo's first world title fight was at the age of 26 on June 17, 2000, against Stevie Johnston for the lightweight WBC title. He won the fight via 12-round majority decision, becoming the lightweight champion of the world.

One of Castillo's career highlights was his fight against Diego Corrales on October 8, 2005. The fight is considered one of the best fights of all time and is known as "The War to Settle the Score." Although Castillo knocked down Corrales in the fourth round, Corrales managed to beat the count and won the fight with a TKO in the 10th round.

Castillo's career featured several other notable victories, including wins against Seung-Ho Yuh, Fred Ladd, Iván Popoca, Julio Díaz, César Bazán, and Christian Solano.

Despite his successes, Castillo also suffered 13 losses in his professional boxing career, with five of them in title bouts and eight in non-title bouts. His first loss came against César Soto via 2nd round TKO on July 9, 1993, ending his 18-fight win streak. Of his 13 losses, he suffered eight via knockout.

Castillo's professional boxing career came to an end on November 28, 2014, in a non-title bout against Russian boxer Ruslan Provodnikov. Castillo lost the fight via 5th round TKO.

While Castillo's professional boxing career may have ended, his legacy lives on as one of the best lightweights of his era.
