Boxing is a sport that separates the great boxers from those who couldn't quite cut it at the highest level. With a career spanning over 11 years, Jose Torres is undoubtedly one of the former.
During his professional boxing career, Torres fought a total of 45 times, winning 41, losing 3, and drawing once, with no no-contests. Out of his 41 wins, 29 were through knockouts. This is a record that speaks volumes about the Puerto Rican boxer's skills, power and technique.
Interestingly, Torres' professional debut against Gene Hamilton on May 24, 1958, resulted in a 1st round KO victory, and he went on to win the next 12 fights in a row, 10 of which were wins via stoppage. It was clear from the start that Torres had all the skills required to make it big in the sport.
After 36 professional fights, Torres had his first world title fight at the age of 28 on March 30, 1965, against Willie Pastrano for the light-heavyweight WBA, WBC, and The Ring titles. He defeated Pastrano via 9th round TKO to become the light-heavyweight champion of the world, a feat that would cement his name in boxing history forever.
As a one-time undisputed light-heavyweight world champion, Torres won three world titles at light-heavyweight, and he did not disappoint his fans, as he won all his title defenses. In total, he won three title fights - an achievement that many boxers can only dream of.
Torres fought some of the best boxers of his era and had many notable victories, including wins over Hall-of-Famer Willie Pastrano, Chic Calderwood, Bob Dunlop, Charley Green, Tom McNeeley, Eddie Cotton, and Wayne Thornton. These victories demonstrated his boxing prowess, speed and accuracy and proved that he was a master inside the ring.
Despite his impressive record, Torres had a total of three losses in his professional boxing career - two of them in title bouts and one in a non-title bout. He suffered his first loss against Florentino Fernández via 5th round TKO on May 25, 1963, which ended his 26-fight win streak. He was stopped once and lost two times via decision, but he never let his losses deter him.
On July 14, 1969, Torres fought his last professional fight. It was a non-title bout against Charley Green, and Torres won the fight via 2nd round KO, ending his boxing career with a record of 41-3-1.
Even after retiring from professional boxing, Torres' legacy and influence continued to spread in the sport. In 1997, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF), an honor bestowed upon only the greatest boxers to have graced the sport of boxing.
In closing, whether it was his impressive winning record, his stunning victories over other boxing greats, or his unwavering determination to succeed, Jose Torres remains one of the greatest boxers of all time. His contribution to the sport of boxing will never be forgotten, and his story will continue to inspire generations of boxing fans for many years to come.
