José Uzcátegui, also known as "Bolivita," is a Venezuelan professional boxer with a career spanning over a decade. He was born on December 24, 1990, in El Vigia, Mérida, Venezuela, and has become a formidable force in the middleweight and super middleweight weight classes. Uzcátegui has a professional record of 31-5, with 26 KO wins in his 36 fights. He has never been stopped, and all his losses have come by decision, making him one of the toughest boxers in his weight class.
He made his professional boxing debut against Ramiro Rosales in 2011 and won his first 22 fights. In 2013, Uzcátegui won against 'Porky' Rogelio Medina via unanimous decision over ten rounds. Later the same year, he also defeated Michel Rosales, Francisco Villanueva by a technical knockout in the first round. 2015 proved to be another successful year, where he won a knockout victory against Julius Jackson in the second round.
In his next fight against Matt Korobov, for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental middleweight title in 2014, Uzcátegui suffered his first loss. Korobov defeated him via 10 round unanimous decision, ending his 22-fight winning streak. However, Uzcátegui bounced back and continued to impress, winning wins against Andre Dirrell, Rogelio Medina, David Alonso López, Francisco Villanueva, Michel Rosales, and Ezequiel Osvaldo Maderna.
One of his most notable victories came in his rematch against Andre Dirrell for the IBF Interim super-middleweight title in March 2018. Uzcátegui was hurting Dirrell throughout the fight, and in the eighth round, Dirrell's cutman, Jacob 'Stitch' Duran, decided to instruct the referee to stop the fight. The decision led to an eighth-round technical knockout win for Uzcátegui.
He then faced undefeated Caleb Plant in his first defense of the full version of the IBF Super middleweight title at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. Uzcátegui lost via unanimous decision after being knocked down in the second and fourth rounds, losing his title in the process. With 31 wins and five losses, Uzcátegui is known for his strength, hard-hitting punches, and his ability to take hits and continue fighting.
Standing at 6 ft 2 in (188 cm), with a reach of 76+1/2 in (194 cm), and an orthodox stance, Uzcátegui is a formidable opponent. In his most recent fight, a non-title bout against Russian boxer Vladimir Shishkin on December 17, 2022, Uzcátegui lost via a 12 round unanimous decision.
Despite his recent loss, Uzcátegui's career remains impressive, and he is widely regarded as one of Venezuela's top boxers. His fighting style highlights his strength and accuracy, making it difficult for opponents to keep up with him.
While Uzcátegui is yet to win a world title, he continues to be a fighter to watch out for in the world of boxing. His tremendous physical attributes, combined with his fierce fighting style, makes him a fan favorite. Uzcátegui's fighting style and work ethic are reflective of Venezuela's rich boxing heritage, inspiring upcoming boxers to strive for greatness.
In conclusion, José Uzcátegui continues to be a household name in the world of boxing. With an impressive record of 31-5 and his never-back-down attitude, he has established himself as one of the best boxers in the middleweight and super middleweight division. He remains a highly respected athlete who continues to inspire a new generation of boxers to follow in his footsteps.
