Juan Manuel Márquez, a Mexican professional boxer, is considered one of the greatest counter-punchers of all time. Over the course of his impressive 20-year career, he fought in a total of 64 bouts with an incredible record of 56 wins, 7 losses, and 1 draw, with no no-contests. He had an impressive knockout percentage of 62.5%, with 40 of his victories coming from KO.
Márquez had his professional debut on May 29, 1993, against Javier Duran, where he lost via 1st round disqualification. This loss did not deter Márquez, as he went on to win his next 29 consecutive fights, including 22 by way of stoppage.
It wasn't until Márquez's 30th fight, on September 11, 1999, that he had his first world-title fight for the WBA featherweight title. Unfortunately, he lost to Freddie Norwood via 12 round unanimous decision.
But Márquez was not deterred by this loss and continued to train and improve. He became a two-time unified world champion, at lightweight and featherweight, and won six world titles across three weight classes.
Márquez's career highlights include his first-ever world-title win, the IBF featherweight title, which he won from Manuel Medina on February 1, 2003, via 7th round technical knockout.
On November 1, 2003, Márquez became a unified featherweight world champion by defeating Derrick Gainer via 7 round technical-decision, holding the IBF and WBA (Super) featherweight world-champion belts.
Perhaps one of Márquez's most iconic fights was against Manny Pacquiao on May 8, 2004, securing in a draw via 12 rounds split-decision while defending his WBA (Super) and IBF featherweight titles and fighting for The Ring featherweight title.
On March 17, 2007, Márquez won the WBC super-featherweight title from Marco Antonio Barrera in a 12 round unanimous decision, one of Marquez's most unforgettable fights.
In 2008, Márquez was able to become The Ring lightweight champion after defeating Joel Casamayor via 11th round KO on September 13th of that year.
Márquez became a unified lightweight world champion by beating Juan Díaz via 9th round TKO on February 28, 2009, holding The Ring, WBA (Super), and WBO lightweight world-champion belts.
On July 31, 2010, Márquez successfully defended the WBA (Super), WBO, and The Ring lightweight titles against Juan Díaz, winning the fight via unanimous decision.
On November 27, 2010, Márquez also successfully defended the WBA (Super), WBO, and The Ring lightweight titles against Michael Katsidis, winning the fight via 9th round TKO.
Throughout his career, Márquez made history and left his mark as one of the greatest Mexican boxers of all time. Out of his seven losses, five were in title battles, and two were in non-title fights. However, he has never been stopped and has never lost via knockout.
After his last professional fight against Mike Alvarado, which he won via unanimous decision on May 17, 2014, Márquez decided to retire.
Márquez's incredible record, legendary fights, and superb performances throughout his career led to his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in 2020, where he will always be remembered for his outstanding contribution to the sport of boxing.
