Julio César Chávez is one of the most legendary boxers of all time with a career that spanned over 25 years. He was born on July 12, 1962, in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, Mexico, and made his professional boxing debut against Andres Felix at just 17 years old. He won the fight via second-round knockout (KO) and went on to win 86 consecutive fights, including 72 wins via stoppage.
Chávez won his first world title in 1984 at the age of 22, defeating Mario Martínez for the WBC super-featherweight title via eighth-round TKO. He continued to defend his title multiple times against notable fighters like Ruben Castillo and Roger Mayweather. He then moved up to lightweight and won the WBA title in 1987 by defeating Edwin Rosario via 11th round TKO.
In 1988, Chávez became a unified lightweight world champion by defeating José Luis Ramírez via 11th round technical decision. He then moved up to super-lightweight and won the WBC title by defeating Roger Mayweather via 10th round RTD in 1989. He unified the division in 1990 by defeating IBF champion Meldrick Taylor via 12th round TKO.
Chávez had a total of 115 fights, with an impressive record of 107 wins, six losses, and two draws. He won a total of seven world titles across three weight classes and had 27 title defenses. He was known for his aggressive style and devastating body punches, earning him the nickname "El Gran Campeon Mexicano" (The Great Mexican Champion).
Despite his incredible record, Chávez had six losses in his career, four of them in title fights and two in non-title fights. His first loss was against Frankie Randall in 1994, which ended his 89-fight win streak, and he suffered his only losses via knockout in his last four fights.
Chávez retired in 2005 with a record of 107-6-2, including 86 knockout wins and seven world titles. In 2011, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest boxers of all time.
