Lewis Ritson is a professional boxer who made his debut on April 4, 2015, at 21 years of age, defeating Kristian Laight via 4 round PTS. In a career that has seen him compete in 26 fights so far, Ritson has won 23, with 13 coming by way of knockout. He has lost three times, all in non-title bouts, and has never been involved in a draw or no-contest.
Despite suffering defeat in his latest fight against fellow British boxer Ohara Davies on March 4, 2023, in a non-title bout, Ritson is a highly-rated fighter. He had been on a 17-fight win streak before his first loss against Francesco Patera via 12 round split-decision on October 13, 2018, and had won a further six bouts before the Davies fight. While Ritson has never won a world title or even competed for one, his impressive record and the quality of his victories suggests he has the potential to do so in the near future.
Some of the notable victories achieved by Ritson in his professional boxing career include wins over Joe Murray, Robbie Davies Jr., Scott Cardle, Robbie Barrett, Paul Hyland Jnr, Dejan Zlaticanin, and Christian Uruzquieta. One of his most memorable performances came in his fight against Joe Murray in a lightweight bout at Manchester Arena on March 25, 2017. Despite initially being scheduled to fight for the WBC International lightweight title, the fight was changed to a non-title bout when Murray was unable to make the weight. It did not seem to affect Ritson, however, as he dominated the fight and won by TKO in the 10th round.
Another impressive performance came against Scott Cardle on June 23, 2018, in a lightweight contest for the British title. The fight took place in Ritson's hometown of Newcastle, and he produced a dominant display, stopping Cardle in the second round to claim the title. He made a successful defense of the title in his next fight against Paul Hyland Jnr on July 28, 2018, winning via knockout in the first round.
While Ritson's record is impressive, he has faced setbacks in his career too. He suffered his first loss against Patera in a closely-fought encounter that saw the Belgian fighter come out on top via split decision. Ritson's next fight, against former WBA lightweight world champion Miguel Vazquez, ended in a controversial decision loss for Ritson. Many thought he had done enough to win the fight, but the judges saw it differently, and Vazquez was declared the winner via majority decision.
Ritson's most recent loss, against Ohara Davies, was a tough defeat to take. The two fighters had been engaged in a close contest before Davies landed a decisive right hand in the ninth round that ended Ritson's hopes of victory. Despite the loss, Ritson received praise for his performance, with many observers noting that he had shown great heart and determination in the fight.
Looking ahead to the rest of his career, Ritson remains a highly-regarded fighter. His record and the quality of his victories suggest that he has the potential to achieve great things in the sport, and he will no doubt be looking to bounce back from his latest defeat as soon as he can. While he has yet to win a world title, Ritson's impressive record and the excitement he generates among fans suggest that it may only be a matter of time before he does so.
