Manny Pacquiao is a legendary Filipino boxer, renowned for his exceptional speed, dexterity, and impeccable fighting technique. Born Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao on December 17, 1978, in Kibawe, Bukidnon, he has a long list of accolades to his name that have cemented his place as one of the greatest professional boxers of all time. Pacquiao has won an astonishing 62 fights out of the 72 he competed in, with 39 of them being KO wins. He has also won 13 world championship titles across an impressive eight weight divisions, further attesting to his prowess in the ring.
Pacquiao's professional boxing career spanned over 28 years, starting in 1995 when he was just 16 years old, and ended in 2023. His debut fight was against Edmund Enting Ignacio, in which he defeated his opponent convincingly via a 4 round unanimous decision. Pacquiao went on to win his next 10 fights consecutively, four of which were stoppage wins. On December 4, 1998, after 24 professional fights, Pacquiao was presented with his first world title fight against Chatchai Sasakul for the Flyweight WBC title, which he won via an 8th round KO, to become the flyweight champion of the world.
Pacquiao's boxing career included notable victories over seven hall-of-famers such as Timothy Bradley, Juan Manuel Márquez, Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto, Oscar De La Hoya, Marco Antonio Barrera, and Érik Morales, and other boxers such as Ricky Hatton, Antonio Margarito, and Lehlo Ledwaba. In total, Pacquiao had eight losses in his professional boxing career, with four of them being in title bouts and the remaining four in non-title fights. He suffered his first loss against Rustico Torrecampo via 3rd round KO on February 9, 1996, which ended his 11-fight win streak. Pacquiao has been stopped three times and lost five times via decision. His last professional fight was on August 21, 2021, against Cuban boxer Yordenis Ugás for Ugás' welterweight WBA (Super) title, which he lost via a 12-round unanimous decision.
Pacquiao deserves recognition in the boxing world for being the only eight-division world champion in history, earning twelve major world titles, being the first to win the lineal championship in five different weight classes, and owning major world titles in four of the eight "glamour divisions." Moreover, he is the only boxer to hold world championships across four decades (1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s), and in July 2019, became the oldest welterweight world champion at 40 years of age. As of 2015, Pacquiao's fights had generated $1.2 billion in revenue from his 25 pay-per-view bouts. Forbes named him the second-highest-paid athlete globally in 2015, attesting to his tremendous success in the sport.
Pacquiao's fighting style is effortless and entertaining to watch. He is a southpaw, and his proficiency in the traditional "Filipino boxing style" makes him stand out, as he combines quick and explosive combinations with intelligent footwork, relentless energy, and the versatility to switch fighting styles when required. Pacquiao's punching power and accuracy have earned him the nickname "PacMan."
Outside of boxing, Pacquiao is known for his philanthropic work, entrepreneurship, and robust political career. In 2010, he entered Philippine politics and was elected as the representative of Sarangani. During his tenure, he championed several pro-poor bills, such as the nutrition and anti-poverty laws. In 2016, he was elected and served as a Senator of the Philippines until 2022. In 2020, Pacquiao became the president of his party, PDP-Laban.
Pacquiao's record may speak for itself, but his personal life is just as noteworthy. He has been married to Jinkee Jamora since May 10, 1999, and the couple has five children. Notably, his eldest son, Jimuel, has followed in his footsteps as an amateur boxer, model, and actor. His second son, Michael, is an accomplished rapper with tens of millions of streams to his name. Pacquiao's daughter, Mary Divine Grace (Princess), is a famous YouTube vlogger who has amassed millions of subscribers, even starting the Pacquiao family's network of YouTube content.
Manny Pacquiao is a celebrated legend both in the ring and in life. His boxing accolades, impressive political and philanthropic accomplishments, and involvement in various industries showcase his versatility, resilience, and dedication to excellence. He will forever remain an inspiration to aspiring boxers worldwide and will always be recognized as one of the greatest boxers ever to set foot in the ring.
