During that time, he fought in 46 professional boxing bouts achieving a record of 39-6-1 with 17 wins through knockouts.
Murray made his professional boxing debut on September 22, 2007, against Jamie Ambler, and won the match via 6 round PTS at the Robin Park Arena in Wigan, UK. Two years later, on April 27, 2013, he faced Sergio Martinez for the WBC and The Ring middleweight titles. In the end, however, Martinez won by a unanimous decision, earning Murray his first professional loss.
During his career, Murray faced some of the best boxers in the world, including Gennady Golovkin, Arthur Abraham, and George Groves.
In his fight against Golovkin in February 2015, Murray showed great courage and resilience but ultimately succumbed to the Kazakh's power, losing via TKO in the 11th round. In November 2015, Murray returned to the ring, competing at super-middleweight for the first time in his career. He won his next three fights, including one against former champion Arthur Abraham in which he gave an excellent performance.
Murray's last professional fight was on December 4, 2020, against fellow British boxer Billy Joe Saunders for Saunders' super-middleweight WBO title. Murray lost the fight via unanimous decision as he announced his retirement from the sport with a 39-6-1 record.
Despite never winning a world title, Murray had an impressive career and was renowned for being a tough opponent who always put on an excellent display in the ring. His professional success is also a source of inspiration to many aspiring boxers.
