Masataka Taniguchi, a Japanese professional boxer, made his debut on April 3, 2016, against Thawi Chaisat. He won the fight through a first-round knockout (KO) at the age of 22. Taniguchi went on to win his next five consecutive fights, with three of them via stoppage.
At age 25, Taniguchi had his first world title fight on February 26, 2019, against Vic Saludar for the WBO title. Unfortunately, he lost to Saludar via 12-round unanimous decision. However, Taniguchi has won one world title at strawweight, and he successfully defended his title once.
Despite his short career, Taniguchi has already made his presence known in the boxing world, with some notable victories over Wilfredo Méndez, Kai Ishizawa, Tatsuro Nakashima, Benjie Bartolome, Hizuki Saso, and Narathip Sungsut.
From his 20 total fights, the 16 wins, and 11 knockout victories, Masataka Taniguchi showed an impressive record. He has faced four losses, two of which happened during title bouts and the other two in non-title bouts. His first defeat was against Reiya Konishi, where he lost via 10-round majority decision on April 9, 2017. Taniguchi suffered one loss via KO in his career.
Taniguchi's most recent fight happened on January 6, 2023. He faced Melvin Jerusalem, a fierce Filipino boxer in a strawweight title defense bout. However, Taniguchi lost the match on a 2nd round TKO, and he lost his WBO title. As of writing, it's been 2 months and 25 days since his last fight, and he remains on a one-fight losing streak.
During his bouts, Taniguchi showed a lot of potential and heart, with his KO power and impressive record early in his career. However, his recent loss to Jerusalem only showed that he could still improve his techniques and approach, perhaps by working on his defensive tactics or adding to his boxing arsenal.
In conclusion, with his record and achievements in boxing, Masataka Taniguchi has already made a name for himself in the sport. Although he suffered a significant setback in his recent title defense bout, his boxing career is still filled with promise, and fans are looking forward to seeing what he can do next in the ring.
