Mia St. John is an American former professional boxer who has achieved worldwide recognition as one of the most successful female boxers in the sport's history. Over the course of her 19-year career from 1997 to 2016, John fought a total of 65 professional fights, winning 49 of them, including 19 by knockout.
St. John began her professional boxing career at the relatively late age of 29 on February 14, 1997, when she made her debut against Angelica Villian. She impressed from the outset, defeating Villian via a 1st round knockout. In the 22 fights which followed this debut, John managed to maintain an incredible undefeated streak, winning all 22 fights.
Some of the most significant moments in St. John's career came in her two title fights. On August 14, 2012, at the age of 45, John finally got her first world title fight against Christy Martin for the super-welterweight WBC (vacant) title. Despite Martin being a highly experienced and highly regarded opponent, John managed to secure the victory via a 10 round unanimous decision, marking one of the most significant achievements in her career. Her other title fight ended in a loss, with Hannah Gabriel securing the unanimous decision win to retain her WBO super welterweight title.
Throughout her career, Mia St. John demonstrated incredible toughness and resilience, which helped her to weather some of the most challenging moments in the sport. Over the course of her career, she suffered a total of 14 losses, including two in title fights and 12 in non-title bouts. However, despite these losses, she remained one of the most highly respected names in the sport, thanks to her ability to face adversity and overcome it time and time again.
St. John took part in some of the most iconic fights in women's boxing throughout her career, with her most notable victories including wins over Hall-of-Famer Christy Martin, Lisa Lewis, Shelby Walker, and Amy Yuratovac. Her victory over Christy Martin was one of the most significant events in her career, and it remains an iconic moment in the history of women's boxing.
Mia St. John suffered five losses via knockout during her career, but this should not detract from her incredible achievements as a boxer. Her ability to absorb punishment and continue to fight on made her a role model for many young boxers, and her attitude towards the sport remains an inspiration to this day.
After an incredible 19-year career, Mia St. John retired from professional boxing with an impressive record of 49-14-2. Throughout her career, she demonstrated unparalleled dedication and commitment to the sport, and she remains one of the most respected and well-regarded names in the world of boxing. No matter what challenges she faced throughout her time as a boxer, St. John proved that she had the strength, toughness, and resilience needed to succeed in one of the most challenging and demanding sports in the world.
