Monte Barrett, born on May 26, 1971, in Greenville, North Carolina, is a former American professional boxer who boxed his way into the heavyweight division. He enjoyed a career that spanned over 17 years, from 1996 to 2014, and he had several notable fights with numerous top heavyweights during that time. He is widely known for his two-gun nickname and has registered some impressive stats, including 35 wins, 11 losses, and 2 draws in his 48 fights.
Barrett began his professional boxing career in 1996, at the age of 25, against Jamal Edwards. He won his debut fight with a first-round knockout. He then won 20 consecutive fights, stopping 12 of them in the process, before eventually losing his first fight as a professional against Lance Whitaker via split decision on August 28, 1998, which ultimately ended his 21-fight win streak.
Barrett had his first shot at a world title when he challenged Nikolai Valuev for the WBA heavyweight title on October 7, 2006. However, he lost to Valuev via an 11th round technical knockout. Despite losing, he fought and won against many top-ranked fighters throughout his remarkable career.
Barrett has been in the ring with some of the significant boxing names of his era, including Wladimir Klitschko, Joe Mesi, Hasim Rahman, David Tua, and Nikolai Valuev. Some of his notable victories include wins over Tye Fields, Cliff Couser, Dominick Guinn, Damon Reed, and Odlanier Solis.
Monte Barrett's professional record includes 35 wins, 11 losses, and 2 draws. Of his 35 wins, 20 came via knockout, while he suffered 7 of his losses via knockout. Despite never winning a world title, Barrett has a legacy as a formidable fighter and earned the respect of boxing fans and other fighters alike.
One remarkable thing about Barrett was his determination and unwillingness to give up, even when faced with an opponent's superiority. For instance, in 2000, he went toe to toe with future world champion Wladimir Klitschko, despite being knocked down several times, proving his tenacity and fighting spirit to boxing fans worldwide.
Barrett's last professional fight was in 2014 against Luis Ortiz, which he lost via a fourth-round knockout. He retired from boxing with a professional record of 35 wins, 11 losses, and 2 draws. His 20 knockout wins make him one of the most exciting heavyweight boxers to watch in the ring.
Monte Barrett may not have won any world titles throughout his career, but his legacy will always be that of an excellent fighter and a warrior in the ring. His fighting spirit, tenacity, and absolute determination earned him the respect of the boxing community and fans worldwide.
