Nicolino Locche, born on September 2, 1939, in Tunuyán, Argentina, was an accomplished professional boxer who became famous for his unique boxing style. Nicknamed "The Untouchable," Locche was a tactical fighter known for his defensive skills, exceptional footwork, and counterpunching ability. With a professional career spanning over 17 years, he registered an impressive record of 117-4-14, inclusive of 14 KO wins and one loss via knockout.
Locche started his professional boxing career on December 11, 1958, at the age of 19, with a 2nd round KO win over Luis García. He won his next two fights, and in 1962 he won the South American Lightweight Title against Eduardo Lausse. It took him 106 professional fights to get a shot at the world title, which he won against Takeshi Fuji on December 12, 1968. Locche defeated Fuji via a 10th round RTD to become the WBA and The Ring's super-lightweight champion.
A hallmark of Locche's career was his impressive defense. He used his footwork to evade his opponents, slipping and ducking punches with ease. Due to his exceptional defense, his opponents had trouble landing punches on him, and this left them frustrated and fatigued, making it easy for Locche to land counterpunches effectively. Locche's mastery of the hit-and-don't-get-hit art of boxing was evident in his world title fights and helped him win two world titles at super-lightweight.
In addition to his world title victories, Locche registered some impressive victories over accomplished boxers. One of his best fights was against Eddie Perkins, a former WBA and WBC light-welterweight champion. Locche beat Perkins in 1972, using his defensive prowess to win the fight by a unanimous decision. He also beat Antonio Cervantes in 1975, who was the WBA light-welterweight champion at the time. Locche impressed the boxing world with his tactical approach, as he outboxed Cervantes in every round, earning himself another unanimous decision victory.
However, Locche's career was not without its blemishes. He had four losses in his career, with two of them coming in title fights against Antonio Cervantes and Eddie Perkins. He also lost to Vicente Derado in a non-title fight via a 10 round PTS on November 6, 1959. He was stopped only once in his career, in a fight against Alvaro Rojas, but regardless of his losses and the manner in which they came, Locche will always be remembered for his exceptional defense, which made him a difficult opponent for any boxer.
Locche retired from professional boxing in 1976 with a record of 117-4-14, securing his legacy as one of the greatest fighters of his time. In 2003, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, an honor he truly deserved for his exceptional skills and contributions to the sport of boxing. Despite his retirement, Locche's influence on the sport of boxing is still palpable today, and his defensive skills continue to inspire many boxers around the world.
To sum up, Nicolino Locche, with his impressive defensive skills, tactical approach, and unique style, was one of the greatest boxers of his time. His two world title wins, coupled with several victories over accomplished boxers, are a testament to his exceptional skills and contributions to the sport. Even though he had some losses, they do not define him, and his legacy as "The Untouchable" shall always remain, inspiring many boxers for years to come.
