Salido's professional boxing career began at the young age of 17, when he made his debut against Iván Cazarez on March 1, 1996, losing to him via 4th round TKO. Despite this loss, Salido bounced back and won 4 consecutive fights, including one via stoppage. He did not get his first world title fight until the age of 25, on September 18, 2004, after 33 professional fights, where he fought Juan Manuel Márquez for the WBA (Super) and IBF titles.
