Roberto Durán is considered to be one of the greatest boxers of all time, with a career that spanned over 33 years. Born in Panama City, Panama on June 16, 1951, Durán began his professional boxing career at the young age of 16. He made his debut against Carlos Mendoza on February 23, 1968, and won via a unanimous decision in a four-round fight.
After his debut, Durán went on an incredible winning streak, with 30 consecutive wins, including 27 stoppages. His first world title fight was at the age of 21 against Ken Buchanan on June 26, 1972.
Durán won his first world titles by defeating Buchanan via 13th round TKO, making him the WBA and The Ring lightweight world champion. He became a one-time undisputed lightweight world champion and won seven world titles at four weight classes.
Durán had some incredible performances throughout his career, but perhaps his most famous fight was his 1980 showdown with Sugar Ray Leonard. Going into the fight, Durán was the underdog, but he was able to win the WBC and The Ring welterweight titles from Leonard by beating him via a 15 round unanimous decision. The fight was dubbed "The Brawl in Montreal", and it is still considered one of the greatest fights in boxing history.
Durán's career record stands at an impressive total of 119 fights, with 103 wins, 16 losses, and no draws or no-contests. He had 70 KO wins, with only 4 losses via KO. Duran also had 8 total title wins and made 12 title defenses. He won 13 title-fight KO wins and suffered his first loss against Esteban de Jesús via a 10 round unanimous decision on November 17, 1972, which ended his 31-fight win streak.
Durán fought many notable bouts and defeated six Hall-of-Famers, including Davey Moore, José Cuevas, Sugar Ray Leonard, Carlos Palomino, Ken Buchanan, and Lloyd Marshall. Among his most significant career achievements, he beat Esteban de Jesús via 12th round TKO to become the undisputed lightweight world champion of the WBA, The Ring, and WBC on January 21, 1978.
In 1983, Durán moved up to the super-welterweight division, where he won the WBA super-welterweight title from Davey Moore, beating him via a brutal 8th round TKO on June 16, 1983. However, in November that year, Roberto Durán lost to Marvelous Marvin Hagler via a 15 round unanimous decision. He was fighting for the unified WBA, WBC, IBF, and The Ring middleweight titles. Nevertheless, Durán achieved outstanding success throughout his career.
Durán finally retired from professional boxing on July 14, 2001, after a super-middleweight bout against Puerto Rican boxer Hector Camacho. Durán lost the fight via a 12 round unanimous decision, ending his incredible career with a record of 103-16 and a total of 70 knockout victories in the ring.
Roberto Durán is recognized as both a living legend and a trailblazer in the sport of boxing, and for good reason. He set an excellent example for young boxers and his determination and heart can be a source of inspiration to people all over the world.
