Román González, also known as Chocolatito, is a Nicaraguan professional boxer born on June 17, 1987. He made his professional debut at the age of 18, defeating Ramon Urbina via second-round KO on July 1, 2005. With over 20 years of experience, González has fought a total of 55 times as a professional. He has an incredible record of 51 wins and only four losses, with 41 of those wins coming via KO.
González has won titles in five weight classes, making him one of the most successful fighters in the history of boxing. He won his first world title at the age of 21 in September 2008, defeating Yutaka Niida via fourth-round TKO to become the WBA strawweight champion of the world. Since then, González has won titles in four more weight classes, the WBC and The Ring flyweight titles, WBC super-flyweight title, WBA (Super) super-flyweight title, and The Ring super-flyweight title. González also holds the record for the most wins in strawweight division history, with 10 successful title defenses.
González has faced some of the most elite fighters in the boxing world, including Carlos Cuadras, Juan Francisco Estrada, Akira Yaegashi, Brian Viloria, Kal Yafai, Julio Cesar Martinez, and Francisco Rodríguez Jr. Some of his most notable victories include a win against Yaegashi in September 2014, where González won the WBC and The Ring flyweight titles by defeating Yaegashi via ninth-round TKO. In September 2016, González won the WBC super-flyweight title by beating Cuadras via 12 round unanimous decision.
Although González has had an incredibly successful career, he suffered his first defeat in March 2017 against Srisaket Sor Rungvisai via 12 round majority decision. This loss ended his 46-fight win streak, which he had been building since his debut in 2005. González has also been stopped once and lost three times via decision, all of them in title bouts.
González's most recent fight was against Juan Francisco Estrada in December 2022. Unfortunately, he lost the fight via 12 round majority decision, marking his first loss in over four years. Despite this loss, González has proven himself to be one of the most skilled fighters in the boxing world, and he continues to inspire and entertain audiences with his exceptional talent.
Not only is González a successful boxer, but he is also a role model for aspiring athletes. He has received numerous awards for his contribution to the sport and also works to help promote boxing in his community. González is an inspiration to many and continues to leave a lasting impact on the sport of boxing with his impressive career and professional attitude.
