Martinez accomplished his first world title at the age of 26 after beating Nicky Cook for the Super-Featherweight WBO title on March 14, 2009. He had 22 professional fights during that time, with a record of twenty-one wins and one draw. He won the fight via fourth-round TKO to become the world champion, and it was a significant achievement in his career. Martinez's excellent performance against Cook paved the way for a long and successful career in professional boxing as he would go on to win two additional world titles at the super-featherweight classification.
Martinez's boxing style was distinctive, characterized by his quick footwork, powerful punches and impeccable timing. With a height of 5 feet 8 inches (173 cm) and a reach of 67 inches (170 cm), he employed the orthodox stance and was comfortable countering or leading during the fight. His fighting style allowed him to create openings that he exploited with his powerful right hand, earning him numerous knockout victories throughout his career.
Throughout his career, Martinez had many highlight-reel moments that showcased his talents. These moments included his first world title win over Nicky Cook, which was an impressive victory considering that Martinez had only fought 22 times professionally at the time. Seven months later, Martinez had his first successful title defense against Gonzalo Munguía, winning the bout via a fourth-round knockout. Lastly, on April 11, 2015, he won his third world title by beating Orlando Salido via a 12-round unanimous decision, confirming his place as a top-level fighter.
Martinez had to overcome many obstacles in his career, including his four losses. His first loss came against Ricky Burns via 12 round unanimous decision on September 4, 2010. It ended his 24-fight win streak, and it fundamentally changed his career trajectory. Martinez recovered strongly from the loss and went on to win several significant bouts, including victories over Daniel Attah, Diego Magdaleno, and Miguel Beltrán Jr.. Martinez had three losses via knockout, more than anything in the sport, but what counts is the remarkable achievements throughout his career.
Martinez achieved his last win on October 8, 2016, against Orlando Salido, marking the end of the fighter's 17-year-long professional boxing career. Martinez announced his intention to retire from the sport in August 2019 after suffering a defeat to Cuban boxer Yuriorkis Gamboa via second-round knockout. Martinez retired with a record of thirty wins and four losses and enjoyed an impressive career that saw him become a loved figure in the ring.
