If you’re an Australian boxing enthusiast, chances are you’ve heard of Shannan ‘The Bulli Blaster’ Taylor. With over 20 years of professional experience under his belt, Taylor is one of the most accomplished boxers to come out of the country. Let’s take a deeper dive into his career.

Beginnings

Shannan Taylor was born in the town of Bulli, New South Wales, in 1972. From a young age, he showed an interest in boxing, and began training in his early teens at the Bulli PCYC. By the time he was 20, Taylor had made his professional debut, defeating Darrell Hiles via TKO in the second round.

Following his debut, Taylor went on an impressive run of 14 consecutive victories, with nine of those coming via stoppage. During this period, he began to establish himself as a serious contender in the Australian boxing scene.

Professional Career

Taylor’s first world title fight came when he was 33 years old, against Arthur Abraham for the IBF Middleweight title. Unfortunately, he was unable to come out on top, losing via unanimous decision after 12 rounds.

Despite this loss, Taylor continued to fight at a high level, and would go on to face some of the best boxers in the world. Some of his notable victories include wins over Andhika Dgolden, Thongtip Posri, and Andreas Seran.

Throughout his career, Taylor had a total of 10 losses, one of which was in a title bout. He suffered his first loss against Shane Mosley via 6th round RTD on March 10, 2001, which ended his 28-fight win streak. Taylor was stopped six times and lost four times via decision.

One of Taylor’s most memorable fights was against "Sugar" Shane Mosley in Las Vegas back in 2001 for the WBC welterweight title. Although Mosley won the fight, retaining the title, it was a showcase of Taylor’s skill and determination.

Retirement

Taylor’s last professional fight took place on October 7, 2011, against Sintung Kietbusaba. He won the fight via a 4th round KO, bringing his record to 52-10-3, with 37 of those victories coming via knockout.

Unfortunately, Taylor’s retirement from boxing was marred by personal struggles. In November of 2011, he was admitted to a hospital in Wollongong in critical condition after a heroin overdose. He regained consciousness after a week in an induced coma.

Conclusion

Shannan ‘The Bulli Blaster’ Taylor is undoubtedly one of the most accomplished Australian boxers of all time. With over 20 years of professional experience, he has faced some of the toughest opponents in the world and proved his mettle time and time again. Although his career was not without setbacks, he remains a source of inspiration for aspiring boxers everywhere, showcasing the resilience and determination required to succeed in the competitive world of boxing.
