Early Career highlights
Flanagan had his first world title fight at the age of 26 and after 27 professional fights. On July 11, 2015, he fought against Jose Zepeda for the lightweight WBO (vacant) title. Flanagan won the fight via 2nd round RTD to become the lightweight champion of the world, marking the beginning of his career highlights.
Flanagan successfully defended his WBO lightweight title against Diego Magdaleno on October 10, 2015, winning the fight via 2nd round TKO. The fight took place at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England. Flanagan won the fight after unloading a flurry of shots against Magdaleno when he was trapped against the ropes. The official time of the stoppage was 2:38 of round 2. Flanagan dropped Magdaleno down three times in total.
Flanagan's Title Wins and Defenses
Flanagan has won one world title at lightweight, the WBO lightweight title, which he held from 2015 to 2017. He was the first Englishman to win a world title in that weight class.
After claiming the WBO European lightweight title, Flanagan stepped up to challenge unbeaten American Jose Zepeda for the vacant WBO lightweight title. The fight took place at the Velodrome in Manchester on July 11, 2015. Flanagan registered an early win on a technical decision. Zepeda sustained what looked like a bad dislocation to his shoulder due to a clash of arms and was unable to continue, retiring on his stool after round 2. Despite the fight ending early, Flanagan admitted he was upset with the fight finishing after just six minutes of action and talked about a rematch to prove he is the better boxer.
After winning the WBO world title, Flanagan successfully retained the title against a number of challengers. His first title defense was against Diego Magdaleno, which he won via a 2nd round TKO on October 10, 2015. Flanagan successfully defended his world title a second time on March 12, 2016, against Derry Mathews, winning via unanimous decision (115-112, 117-110, 117-110). His third title defense took place on July 9, 2016, against Mzonke Fana, whom he defeated via a unanimous points decision.
Flanagan's fourth title defense took place on November 26, 2016, against Orlando Cruz. Flanagan knocked Cruz down twice in the 8th round, the second of which came after a right hand to the temple, which prompted referee Steve Gray to stop the fight 43 seconds into the round. Flanagan had dominated throughout the fight until the finish. His fifth and final title defense took place on April 8, 2017, against Petr Petrov. Flanagan won via unanimous decision.
