Over his career span of more than a decade, he fought in 34 professional boxing matches, winning 30 of them, losing three, drawing once, and having no no-contests. He scored 20 knockout victories in his career, and won the WBC cruiserweight title once.
Bellew made his debut as a professional boxer on October 6, 2007, when he knocked out Jamie Ambler in the second round of the fight. He then went on to win 15 more consecutive fights after his debut, with 9 of those wins coming by stoppage. In spite of the early successes he faced, it was not until October 15, 2011, when he was 28 years of age, that he had his first crack at a world championship, facing off against Nathan Cleverly for the WBO title. He suffered a loss to Cleverly via 12 round majority decision.
Despite enduring three defeats in his career, all of them in world title fights, Bellew's career remained an illustrious one. Some of his notable victories include wins over David Haye, BJ Flores, Nathan Cleverly, Ilunga Makabu, Isaac Chilemba, and Mateusz Masternak. Bellew's last professional fight took place on November 10, 2018, in which he lost in the eighth round via knockout to Ukrainian fighter Oleksandr Usyk.
Throughout his career, Bellew was known for his brawler style of fighting, always willing to engage his opponents and take a few hits in return. With an 11-year-long professional career, Bellew's performances in the ring have undoubtedly left a mark that boxing enthusiasts will not forget for a long time.
Bellew's professional boxing career began in 2007, where he defeated Jamie Ambler via knockout in the second round. This win was the starting point of a 16-fight winning streak that saw Bellew continue to climb up the rankings to challenge for a title. However, his first shot at a world title at the age of 28, saw him come up short in a losing effort to Nathan Cleverly via majority decision.
Bellew's first cruitiserweight title win came against Ilunga Makabu after he knocked him out in the third round on May 29, 2016, at Goodison Park in Liverpool. He then went on to defend his title successfully against BJ Flores via third-round TKO on October 15, 2016. He then suffered a hiatus due to injury but returned in March 2017 to take on fellow Briton David Haye, who he defeated via 11th round TKO, leading to a rematch with Haye in May 2018, where he completed a victory via fifth-round knockout.
Bellew's professional boxing career spanned over a decade, and despite facing numerous defeats, his fighting style won him many admirers. He was courageous and tough inside the ring and was never hesitant to exchange blows with his opponents.
It is important to note that Bellew's contributions to boxing span beyond his professional career. He was one of the most vocal advocates for more significant payouts for boxers, with his demands leading to the establishment of the Central Boxing Organisation (CBO), an organization solely focused on protecting the rights of boxers. In addition, he has also used his platform to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and the mental toll that professional boxing can take on fighters.
Overall, Tony Bellew has had a highly successful professional boxing career. His hands-on contributions to the sport have undoubtedly redefined how boxers are treated, leading to greater compensations and a better understanding of the sport's mental ramifications. Despite having left the sport, he leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of fighters-to-be.
