Victor Ortiz is an American professional boxer and actor. He was born on January 31, 1987, in Garden City, Kansas, and stands at 5’9’’ and has a reach of 70 inches. Ortiz has a southpaw stance and has fought in the light welterweight, welterweight, and light middleweight weight classes.
Ortiz made his professional boxing debut at the age of 17 on June 4, 2004, against Raul Montes. He defeated Montes via 1st round TKO. Ortiz easily won his first seven fights against weak opponents. However, on June 3, 2005, Ortiz was controversially disqualified in the first round of a bout against unknown Corey Alarcon in Oxnard. After having already knocked Alarcon down once in the round, Ortiz knocked him down again shortly after referee David Denkin ordered the fighters to separate from a clinch. Alarcon stayed down for the count and was awarded the fight based on Denkin's judgment that Ortiz's knockout punch had been an illegal punch during a break. Following the fight, Ortiz continued to win and had built a record of 18–1–1 as of August 30, 2007.
In 2008, ESPN named Ortiz the boxing prospect of the year. Since then, he has been rated as one of the world's top three active welterweights by most sporting news and boxing websites, including The Ring magazine, BoxRec, and ESPN. Ortiz's crowd-pleasing and aggressive fighting style also made him the 2008 ESPN Prospect of the Year.
Ortiz's most significant career highlight came on April 16, 2011. He won his first world title by defeating Andre Berto via 12 round unanimous decision, becoming the WBC welterweight world champion. Many called the fight the early pick for the fight of the year, with both fighters going down twice during the match. The judges scored the match 115–110, 114–112, and 114–111 all for the new WBC Welterweight Champion. The bout was named The Ring magazine's "Fight of the Year" for 2011.
Some of Ortiz's best fights and notable victories include wins over Vivian Harris, Nate Campbell, and Andre Berto. On September 18, 2010, Ortiz faced former WBA Light Welterweight Champion Vivian Harris on the Shane Mosley vs. Sergio Mora undercard at Staples Center. Ortiz knocked Harris down three times in the second round en route to a knock out win in the third round with 45 seconds left. Ortiz was victorious in a unanimous decision victory over Nate Campbell on May 15 at Madison Square Garden on the Undercard of Amir Khan vs. Paulie Malignaggi.
Ortiz has had a total of seven losses in his professional boxing career so far — one of them in a title bout and six in non-title bouts. He suffered his first loss against Corey Alarcon via 1 round DQ on June 3, 2005. He has been stopped five times and lost two times via decision. Ortiz's most recent fight was against fellow American boxer Robert Guerrero on August 21, 2021. Ortiz lost the fight via 10 round unanimous decision. It's been 1 year, 7 months, and 10 days since this fight. Ortiz is currently on a one-fight losing streak.
Ortiz has a professional boxing record of 32-7-3, including 25 knockout wins and five losses via knockout. Ortiz has won one world title at welterweight. He has not yet made a title defense.
Outside of boxing, Ortiz has had roles in the films The Expendables 3 (2014) and Southpaw (2015), and made a cameo appearance in the TV series Ray Donovan.
In conclusion, Victor Ortiz is a highly skilled boxer with a strong fighting style that has made him a top-rated welterweight in his time. Despite a few notable losses, Ortiz's record and accomplishments have cemented his legacy in the sport. With a promising career ahead of him, boxing fans can expect to see more from Ortiz in the coming years.
